2026 World Cup Round of 16: Updated Matchups and Schedule

The tournament has narrowed from 48 teams down to just 16. After the group stage and the Round of 32, half of the contenders remain as the knockout phase intensifies. Several favorites continue, although surprises like Germany's exit to Paraguay and the Netherlands' early departure have shaken things up. The upcoming matches will reveal if more underdogs can advance or if the powerhouse teams dominate.

Round of 16 Matchups and Dates

The bracket divides into two halves, each producing a finalist. On one side, teams include Paraguay, France, Canada, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, USA, and Belgium. Notably, Paraguay knocked out Germany, and Morocco ousted the Netherlands in the previous round.

The other half features Mexico, Switzerland, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Argentina, Norway, and England. Many of these squads won their groups or finished strongly in their pools, setting up intense clashes ahead.

How Teams Reached This Stage

Canada was the first team to secure a spot in this round by beating South Africa 1-0. The rest advanced after narrow victories, including Colombia’s 1-0 win over Ghana on July 3. Other notable Round of 32 results included Paraguay overcoming Germany on penalties and Morocco edging the Netherlands similarly.

Knockout Format Explained

The Round of 16 is the second knockout round, where every match must produce a winner. If tied after 90 minutes, extra time of 30 minutes follows. Persisting deadlocks lead to penalty shootouts, with five players from each team taking turns until one side outscores the other.

The matchups were predetermined before the Round of 32 began, so teams knew their potential opponents well in advance.

Advancement Path in the 2026 World Cup

The 48 teams began in 14 groups of four, playing round-robin matches. Top two finishers from each group plus the eight best third-place teams moved on to the Round of 32, which starts the knockout phase.

From the Round of 32 onward, single elimination decides who advances: Round of 32 to Round of 16, then quarterfinals, semifinals, and final. Losing semifinalists also contest a third-place playoff.
