Complete Lineup Set for the 2026 World Cup
The qualification playoffs have wrapped up, finalizing the roster of 48 teams for this summer's tournament hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. During the December draw, 42 teams were assigned to groups, while six spots were reserved for playoff winners.
Hosts Begin Their Campaigns
United States, automatically qualified as a host, finds itself in Group D. The team started strong with a victory over Paraguay on June 12 and will next face Australia before concluding the group stage against Türkiye.
Canada competes in Group B, opening with a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their remaining matches include games versus Qatar and Switzerland.
Mexico had the distinction of hosting the tournament opener at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, securing a 2-0 win against South Africa. Mexico's other group opponents are Korea and Czechia in Group A.

Tournament Structure and Format
The 48 teams have been drawn into twelve groups of four. Each team will play three matches within its group. After these matches, 32 teams will progress to the knockout stages—top two from each group plus the eight best third-place finishers.
Tie-breakers follow this sequence: goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results, fair play points, then drawing lots if necessary.
FIFA introduced a new bracket system to avoid the highest-ranked teams meeting before the semifinals, splitting them into separate pathways. For instance, Spain (ranked 1) and defending champion Argentina (ranked 2) are on opposite sides, as are France (3) and England (4).
Teams from the same confederation can't be drawn together except for European squads.
