2026 World Cup Group Stage: Qualification Paths and Knockout Round Scenarios

2026 World Cup Group Stage: Who Advances to the Round of 32?

As the 2026 World Cup group stage moves into its second round of matches, some teams have already secured spots in the knockout phase, while others face elimination. The expanded 48-team format changes the dynamic compared to previous tournaments, offering more paths to advance.

Unlike prior World Cups where 32 teams were trimmed to 16 by taking the top two from each of eight groups, this year features 12 groups. The first and second place teams in each group will progress, joined by the eight best third-place finishers. This means 16 teams will be knocked out after the group stage.

Tracking which teams qualify or get eliminated can get complicated, especially with the ranking of third-place teams. Below is a detailed look at each group’s current standings and what each team must do to move forward or avoid early exit.

Group A Standings and What’s Needed

Mexico has clinched the group lead after beating South Korea. South Korea will advance as runner-up if they win or draw against South Africa. South Africa still has a shot at second place with a win over Mexico combined with a Czechia victory over South Korea. Czechia can advance if they beat South Korea and South Africa fails to beat Mexico.

Group B Overview

Canada and Switzerland share the top spot with four points each. Their upcoming match decides the group winner. Switzerland needs a win due to Canada’s superior goal difference; Canada just needs a draw or win. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar face off last and could still reach the knockout round as one of the best third-place teams.

Haiti faces elimination if they lose to Brazil and Morocco beats Scotland. Both Morocco and Brazil remain in contention without being eliminated or qualified after their 1-1 draw.

Group D Outlook

Conversely, Australia can claim first place by defeating the U.S. and if Paraguay does not overcome Turkey. Paraguay is out if they lose to Turkey and Australia avoids losing to the U.S. Turkey faces elimination with a loss to Paraguay and the U.S. avoiding defeat against Australia.

Group E Update

Germany will lead the group if they beat Ivory Coast and Ecuador fails to defeat Curacao. Ivory Coast takes the top spot with a win over Germany and Curacao not beating Ecuador. Ecuador faces elimination if they lose to Curacao and Germany avoids defeat. Curacao is out if they lose to Ecuador and Ivory Coast avoids losing to Germany.

Group H Summary

Tiebreakers Explained

If teams finish level on points, the order is decided by:

  • Overall goal difference
  • Total goals scored
  • Head-to-head points between tied teams
  • Head-to-head goal difference
  • Head-to-head goals scored
  • Highest team conduct score (fewer cards means better score)
  • FIFA Men’s World Ranking
