Understanding the Knockout Stage Format
The Round of 32 kicks off the knockout rounds, where every match eliminates one team. There are no draws or points here. If teams are level after 90 minutes, they play 30 minutes of extra time. Still tied? Then it’s penalties to decide who advances.
Matchups were set based on group placements, with group winners facing runners-up or top third-place finishers from other groups in a fixed bracket.
Advancing Through the World Cup
Starting with 48 teams divided into 14 groups, each squad played three matches in the group stage. Wins earn 3 points, draws 1, losses none. Tiebreakers include goal difference and goals scored. Top two in each group plus the best eight third-place teams move on to Round of 32.
After that, every match is sudden death: winners move forward, losers go home. This continues through Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final.
