Zechiël Reflects on Lille Transfer: Staying at Feyenoord Was Best

Gjivai Zechiël has looked back on the transfer that never happened and can now say it with a straight face: missing out on Lille OSC might have been the best thing that could have happened to him.

At the end of August, the 22-year-old Feyenoord midfielder was high on Lille’s list. The French club pushed hard. Several bids went in, with the final offer reportedly climbing to around €17 million including bonuses. Serious money. Serious intent.

“That was pretty serious,” Zechiël told Voetbal International. “At that moment, it seemed better for me from a sporting point of view.”

For a while, it looked like the next logical step. A move to Ligue 1, a bigger platform, a new league to conquer.

Then the door shut.

Feyenoord dig in

Inside De Kuip, the answer was clear. Feyenoord’s hierarchy saw Zechiël as a cornerstone, not a sale. The club did not want to lose him, certainly not this late in the window, and pushed to keep him “if at all possible”.

So the transfer stalled. Then it died.

While Lille looked elsewhere, Feyenoord moved in a different direction: retention, not replacement. At the start of September, ESPN reporter Sinclair Bischop revealed that the Rotterdam side had reached a verbal agreement with Zechiël over a contract extension, stretching his stay until mid-2028.

“If everything goes well, that should be possible,” the right-footer now says, sounding relaxed about a future that only a few weeks ago seemed destined to run through northern France.

“I feel at home here”

Time has done its work. So has the pitch.

Looking back, Zechiël’s tone has shifted from doubt to conviction.

“Looking back, I am grateful and happy that I am here, because I am simply doing well here,” he says. “I feel at home here, and I am grateful to be out on the pitch here. I am happy that I get to play for this club.”

He talks like a player who has settled into more than just a starting role.

“In the end, you grow into the team, you start to understand your role in the team, but also the staff you are dealing with. That is, of course, also an important part of it. The staff and our style of play suit me very well.”

It’s not just talk. His numbers back it up.

Flying start to the season

Zechiël has opened the new campaign in ruthless form. Across Feyenoord’s six competitive matches so far, the midfielder has already produced four goals and three assists – output that underlines exactly why the club refused to bend when Lille came knocking.

A few weeks ago, Lille looked like the next chapter. Now, with Feyenoord ready to tie him down until 2028 and his influence growing by the game, the real question is different: how far can Zechiël go if he keeps rising in Rotterdam?
