Zeballos' Unexpected Move to Monza: From Napoli to Serie A

Exequiel Zeballos stepped off the plane in Milan with a move that hardly anyone had predicted a few weeks ago. Not to Napoli, the club that had chased him and agreed personal terms. To Monza.

The 24-year-old wide forward arrived from Boca Juniors on deadline day, ending a transfer saga that had seemed destined to finish in the south of Italy, not in Brianza. Napoli had pushed with an offer in the region of €10m plus add-ons, a deal the player was ready to accept. Boca Juniors said no.

With his contract running down to December 31, the situation twisted late. Monza moved, quietly and decisively. They struck a deal believed to be around €4m for 60 per cent of his rights, leaving Boca with a 40 per cent stake in any future sale. A smaller fee now, a bigger bet on tomorrow.

At Milan airport, Zeballos tried to catch his breath.

"It all happened so fast, I will speak with coach Ivan Juric today," he said, still processing the shift from Buenos Aires to Lombardy. There was no hiding the emotional pull behind his choice of country either. "I wanted to come to Italy because my father's idol is Maradona."

That line matters. For an Argentine forward, Serie A still carries the shadow and shine of Diego. Napoli had been the romantic fit, the club where Maradona became myth. The move collapsed, but Italy remained the target.

Inside the Boca dressing room, another link to Serie A had already been in his ear. Leandro Paredes, the former Roma and Juventus midfielder, helped him weigh up the options.

"It's true, Paredes gave me a lot of advice, especially when we were talking about Napoli," Zeballos admitted. The southern giants could not close the deal. Monza did.

On the pitch, Zeballos brings versatility and end product. A wide attacking player who can operate on either flank, he leaves Boca with 16 goals and 16 assists in 140 competitive appearances. Not gaudy numbers, but steady, and achieved under the pressure that comes with wearing that shirt at La Bombonera.

Monza are betting that those figures grow in Italy. Boca are betting that if they do, their 40 per cent will be worth far more than the fee they just banked.

The move that was meant to launch Zeballos in Naples will instead begin in a smaller, hungrier project. How long he stays there, and how high he climbs from Monza, now becomes one of the more intriguing subplots of this Serie A season.
