Yan Diomande's Ambition: From Liverpool to Real Madrid

Yan Diomande never had Liverpool on his mind. Not really.

While Liverpool were weighing up an £86 million bid and plotting how to prise him from RB Leipzig, the Ivorian forward was already looking elsewhere. His gaze, it turns out, was fixed on the white shirt and the Santiago Bernabeu.

Reports from the Liverpool Echo revealed that Liverpool were prepared to go big, offering £86 million for Diomande. Leipzig pushed back, valuing the 20-year-old at more than £100 million. The Premier League side walked away once it became clear the player preferred a move to European champions Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG, too, stepped back when they saw the scale of Leipzig’s demands. The numbers were eye-watering. The French champions baulked. The chase seemed to stall.

That was the opening Real Madrid needed.

Earlier this month, Madrid moved decisively, striking a deal that could rise to £120 million. A record-breaking transfer for an African player, and a statement that the European champions are planning for the next decade, not just the next season.

Now, the suggestion is that this is the move Diomande wanted all along.

Michael Yormark, co-founder of the Roc Nation agency that represents Diomande, lifted the lid on the forward’s true ambition.

“Nathan Campbell, Diomande's agent, sat down with the Ivorian player, and they talked about his dreams and ambitions,” Yormark said.

What came next underlined why Madrid pushed so hard.

According to Yormark, Diomande told them: “I want to be the best player in the world, I want to win the Ballon d'Or, and I want to win titles, and my biggest dream has always been to play for Real Madrid.”

That sentence alone explains why Liverpool and PSG were always fighting a losing battle.

Yormark described how the agency built everything around that dream. “We had to put in place the right plan to achieve his dream. We built a team around this young player. This deal represents a big moment for all of us too. We took an ambitious young man and turned his ambition into reality.”

Behind the scenes, the operation was led by Nathan Campbell, head of global talent recruitment in football at Roc Nation and Diomande’s agent. Speaking to SportsBoom.co.za, Campbell hailed the scale of the agreement.

“This historic deal with Real Madrid is a testament to the incredible work ethic that Yan possesses,” he said, underlining that this was no overnight rise but the product of relentless drive.

He did not hide his pride either.

“We could not be prouder to have contributed to the completion of the biggest transfer deal for an African player in the history of football.”

Now the numbers are signed off, the dream club secured, and the stage set. The question is no longer where Yan Diomande wants to be. It’s whether he can turn that Bernabeu dream into Ballon d’Or reality.
