Xabi Alonso Urges Quick Resolution on Enzo Fernández Situation

Xabi Alonso wants the Enzo Fernández saga off his desk – and quickly.

The Chelsea head coach admitted he is waiting for clarity as Manchester City consider returning with a fresh bid for the Argentina international, whose future has hovered over Stamford Bridge all summer.

City circle as Chelsea wait

Fernández looked bound for Real Madrid earlier in the window before the Spanish giants cooled their interest. That opened the door for Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City, who have identified the midfielder as a major target.

Chelsea set a firm line in the sand two weeks ago, telling suitors they would need to hit their £120m valuation by a specific deadline. City let that date slide. Even so, fresh reports now indicate the Premier League champions are weighing up an offer regardless of that missed cut-off.

So the uncertainty drags on.

Alonso wants answers

For now, Fernández is back in the fold. He has returned to full training and, crucially, featured in Alonso’s first Premier League match in charge on Monday night. Named on the bench, he came on in the 65th minute and helped Chelsea see out a 3-2 win.

Asked afterwards if the midfielder would still be his player when the window shuts, Alonso could not offer any guarantees, but he did not hide his desire for a swift resolution.

“In football, I am not surprised by anything,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. “We will see. My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.”

The message was clear: decide it, one way or the other.

Outgoings take centre stage

While City deliberate, Chelsea’s broader transfer plan is tilting firmly towards sales and loans.

Liam Delap is in talks over a move to Nottingham Forest, while Mamadou Sarr is also close to the exit door. Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk and Marc Guiu are expected to follow, either on loan or in permanent deals, as the club trims and reshapes Alonso’s squad. Dario Essugo has also been made available for a loan move.

Chelsea’s strategy is obvious. The question now is whether Fernández becomes the headline departure of a summer that still has time left to twist.
