World Cup 2026 Group B Preview: Switzerland Favored as Canada Seeks Breakthrough

Group B Overview for World Cup 2026

Switzerland enters the tournament with a history of success and experience that sets them apart from their group rivals. Alongside them are co-hosts Canada, aiming to progress beyond the group stage, while Qatar and Bosnia & Herzegovina both seek to make their mark on the global stage.

The Swiss team is the only squad in Group B to have advanced past the World Cup group phase before, having reached the quarter-finals in 1934, 1938, and 1954. Led by coach Murat Yakin, Switzerland boasts a balanced lineup expected to handle their opponents comfortably before tougher challenges arise in the knockout rounds.

For Canada, Qatar, and Bosnia & Herzegovina, the goal is straightforward: advance from the group. With the World Cup expanded to 48 teams, even some third-place finishers will qualify for the next round, increasing chances for these nations.

Canada

As one of the co-hosts alongside Mexico and the United States, Canada makes its third World Cup appearance after previous participations in 1986 and 2022. Coach Jesse Marsch calls this his best squad ever, hopeful for a first-ever progression into the round of 32.

Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies stands out but faces uncertainty due to a hamstring injury sustained recently. Canada's aim is to improve drastically from 2022 when they exited without points after three losses.

Bosnia & Herzegovina

After a 12-year absence, Bosnia & Herzegovina clinched their spot through European play-offs. Veteran Edin Dzeko, 40, returns for his second World Cup, bringing valuable experience. Sead Kolasinac also features from the 2014 squad.

Dzeko’s late equalizer against Wales and key assist against Italy in qualifiers hint at his continued importance. The young Kerim Alajbegovic could play a vital role given his breakout season.

Qatar

Qatar returns after their debut as hosts in 2022, qualifying for the first time through AFC rounds. Despite finishing last in their group previously, they’ve shown improvement.

Under Julen Lopetegui, known for tactical flexibility, Qatar has faced setbacks including cancelled friendlies due to geopolitical tensions. Their recent form shows just one win in 12 matches, which poses a challenge.

  • Goalkeepers: Salah Zakaria, Mahmoud Abunada, Meshaal Barsham
  • Defenders: Hashmi Hussein, Ayoub Alawi, Boualem Khoukhi, Pedro Miguel, Issa Laaye, Lucas Mendes, Sultan Al-Brake, Homam Al-Amin

Switzerland

Switzerland boasts the most World Cup appearances among the group, participating for the 13th time and sixth consecutive tournament. Their pedigree provides an edge over newcomers and less experienced sides.

Four years ago, they finished runner-up in Group G but suffered a heavy 6-1 loss to Portugal in the round of 16. They bounced back in qualification, topping European Group B undefeated, conceding only twice.

Coach Murat Yakin aims to deliver Switzerland’s best World Cup performance yet. The team uses a 4-2-3-1 formation, adaptable to a 3-4-3 system as seen at Euro 2024.

  • Goalkeepers: Marvin Keller, Gregor Kobel, Yvon Mvogo
  • Defenders: Manuel Akanji, Aurele Amenda, Eray Comert, Nico Elvedi, Luca Jaquez, Miro Muheim, Ricardo Rodriguez, Silvan Widmer
  • Midfielders: Michel Aebischer, Christian Fassnacht, Remo Freuler, Ardon Jashari, Johan Manzambi, Fabian Rieder, Djibril Sow, Ruben Vargas, Granit Xhaka, Denis Zakaria
  • Forwards: Zeki Amdouni, Breel Embolo, Cedric Itten, Dan Ndoye, Noah Okafor

Star Player: Remo Freuler, underrated compared to Xhaka, shines defensively and balances midfield dynamics.

Breakout Talent: Dan Ndoye, whose qualifying impact suggests this World Cup could boost his second season in the Premier League.

FIFA Ranking: 19Odds to win: 80/1

Group B Outlook

Switzerland appears set to lead the group with a clean sweep of wins. Early victories will matter for others, especially since Canada faces Switzerland last, potentially giving the co-hosts an opening. Still, Qatar and Bosnia & Herzegovina might surprise and claim a knockout spot ahead of Canada.
