Wolves' Summer Rebuild: Squad Depth and Promotion Prospects

Wolves head into the new season with numbers on their side – but not necessarily the profile many expected.

On BBC Radio WM, commentator Mike Taylor sat down with former Wolves striker David Kelly to pick apart the club’s summer transfer window, and one theme kept coming back: size versus suitability.

The squad is large. Competition for places will not be an issue. What lingers in the air is a different concern – does this group actually have the Championship know‑how to drag Wolves back to the Premier League at the first attempt?

“This might be a promotion squad – the only thing that we can say for the moment, is it is not what we were anticipating,” Taylor said, capturing the sense of surprise around Molineux at how the window has unfolded.

He didn’t dress it up. “That doesn't mean it will necessarily be bad. We'll know that in a few weeks, but it is not what we were expecting. It just isn't.”

That is the crux of the debate. On paper, Wolves have depth. On grass, in a relentless, unforgiving division, they still have to prove they have the right blend of experience, resilience and quality to turn that depth into a promotion charge.
