Watford captain Mattie Pollock has called for unity as the club’s early-season wobble stretched to five games without a win in all competitions.

Saturday’s narrow defeat at West Brom nudged Watford down to 18th in the fledgling Championship table, a sharp drop from the optimism that followed their opening-day win over Southampton.

Since that bright start, Alessio Dionisi’s side have stalled: two draws, two defeats in the league, and a bruising 5-1 EFL Cup exit at Peterborough with a heavily rotated line-up have stripped away any early-season comfort.

Now comes a pivotal week at Vicarage Road.

Preston visit on Tuesday night, with Stoke City to follow on Saturday. Two home fixtures, back-to-back, in front of a fanbase that has already seen enough turbulence in recent seasons.

“They're two massive games,” Pollock told BBC Three Counties Radio. “We've come up short in the last two away games, so we've got to make sure we put things right in front of our crowd and get the fans with us.”

Captain’s call

Pollock, handed the armband in July, did not duck the situation. He leaned into it.

“I'll do everything in my power to make sure the lads stick together,” he said, underlining the mood inside the dressing room as Watford search for a spark rather than a scapegoat.

The Hornets have not been overrun, but they have been punished. Tight margins, missed chances, and that heavy cup defeat have combined to leave them looking upwards at the pack instead of setting the pace.

Pollock knows the equation is simple enough.

“We came up short at the weekend, but if we can start scoring goals and winning games, then it can still be an exciting season.”
