Virgil van Dijk's Stance on Cody Gakpo's Future at Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk has no interest in hiding how he feels about Cody Gakpo swapping Anfield for the Etihad.

Asked directly if he wants his compatriot to stay at Liverpool amid serious interest from Manchester City, the captain’s answer was sharp and obvious.

“What do you think? He's a top-class player. I think we should keep our quality players,” Van Dijk said after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham.

City are in active talks over a move for Gakpo, with the forward valued at around £80 million. Tottenham Hotspur have also made their interest known, but The Athletic reports that City have become Gakpo’s preferred destination as the window heads into its final days.

Liverpool, though, are not planning to simply open the door. Bradley Barcola is undergoing a medical ahead of his move from Paris Saint-Germain, yet the club will not sanction Gakpo’s departure in the next 48 hours unless another winger is signed before the deadline. The message from Anfield is clear: any exit must be on their terms.

Van Dijk made it equally clear this is not just about numbers in the squad for him.

“We’ll see what the next few days bring. I want him to stay not just because he's a top-class player, but also because he's a friend of mine. He's very important to us,” the Dutch defender added.

While Gakpo’s future hangs in the balance, Barcola’s arrival has given Van Dijk a different kind of talking point. The France international, he believes, is proof that Liverpool still carry serious weight in the market.

“He's a good player, and he has pace," Van Dijk said. "I remember a goal he scored against Chelsea in the Champions League last season. If he comes here, he'll be welcomed with open arms.”

That line summed up the mood: protective of what Liverpool already have, excited by what might be coming through the door.

Van Dijk then widened the lens to the club’s broader appeal and the reality of where Liverpool stand right now.

“I don't think there's any doubt that a club like Liverpool is a very attractive destination for very good players. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We all know we're going through something of a transitional phase. Either you want to be part of it or you don't.”

For the captain, the equation is simple: add quality, stay competitive, and go into the season with no excuses.

“Adding quality to the squad always makes a difference. We'll see what the next few days bring. After Tuesday, we have to fight for everything without any regrets.”
