Victor Osimhen's Remarkable Rise at Galatasaray
Victor Osimhen has climbed into rare air at Galatasaray, and he did it with the ruthless ease of a striker in full command of his craft.
On Friday night, the Nigeria international struck twice in a 4-0 dismantling of Erzurum FK, a performance that did more than just secure three points for the Turkish champions. Those goals pushed his tally to 62 in 76 appearances for the club and carried him past Milan Baros on Galatasaray’s all-time list of highest-scoring foreign players.
Baros, the former Czech Republic star, had long held third place with 61 goals from his time in Istanbul. Osimhen erased that mark in style and did it with time – and games – to spare.
He is not just scoring, he is shaping games. Since arriving at Galatasaray, the 27-year-old has also laid on 16 assists, underlining a broader influence that stretches well beyond the penalty area. He is a focal point, a finisher, and increasingly, a symbol of this current era.
Only two names now sit above him among the club’s foreign greats. Mauro Icardi leads the way with 77 goals, the Argentine forward setting the modern standard for imported firepower. Just behind him is Romanian icon Gheorghe Hagi on 72, a name woven into the fabric of Galatasaray’s history.
Osimhen is closing in.
The numbers from this season tell their own story. His brace against Erzurum FK took him to at least four goals across Galatasaray’s opening two Süper Lig fixtures. No foreign striker at the club had managed that kind of start since Mario Jardel in the 2000/01 campaign, a season still spoken about with a mixture of awe and nostalgia.
To be mentioned in the same breath as Jardel, to be hunting down Icardi and Hagi on the scoring charts – that is the territory Osimhen now occupies.
Each new goal nudges him higher up the rankings, but it also sharpens a more pressing question for Galatasaray: just how far can their No. 9 drag them this season, with history already in his sights?
