The UEFA Champions League is known as the top club football tournament worldwide, drawing Europe's best teams into a thrilling contest every year. The trophy it awards is one of the most prestigious prizes in football. Since the 2024/25 season, the competition has undergone a significant change, introducing a fresh format that some fans might still be getting used to.
This guide breaks down how the updated Champions League format works, including the league phase and knockout rounds.
Expansion and Introduction of the League Phase
The biggest change since 2024/25 is replacing the traditional group stage with a new "league phase." The number of clubs in this stage has increased from 32 to 36.
Previously, the group stage consisted of eight groups of four teams each. Now, all 36 teams are ranked together in a single league table. Each team plays eight matches—four at home and four away—against different opponents determined by a special draw. After this phase, 24 teams advance to the knockout rounds.
The stakes remain high throughout. The top eight teams secure a direct spot in the Round of 16, while the next 16 teams (ranked 9th to 24th) enter a knockout playoff round. The bottom 12 teams end their European campaigns without moving to other tournaments like the Europa League or Conference League.

The "Swiss Model" Explained
This new format is often called the "Swiss model." Essentially, it means a single league system where each team faces a set number of opponents, rather than fixed groups. This approach lets clubs meet a wider variety of rivals early on and offers fans more chances to see big matchups sooner.
League Phase Draw Details
The draw decides which eight opponents each team will face in the league phase, with half of those games played at home. Teams earn three points for a win and one for a draw, following standard league rules.
Seedings still apply, split into four pots based mainly on UEFA club coefficients. Every team will play two teams from each pot, balancing the competition between stronger and less experienced sides.

Europa League Dropouts Removed
Before, teams finishing third in their Champions League groups could continue their European journey by moving to the Europa League. That option no longer exists. Clubs placing in the bottom 12 of the league phase exit European competition completely for the season.
Knockout Phase Changes
The knockout rounds have mostly stayed the same but now include an additional stage due to the larger field advancing.
Teams ranked 9th through 24th enter the knockout playoff round. Those in the top eight skip this and go straight to the Round of 16.
There are two draws: the first sets playoff matchups and builds much of the bracket, assigning each top-eight team a group of four possible opponents. The second draw determines exactly which playoff winners face the top eight in the Round of 16, completing the bracket.
