Trabzonspor Rejects Fatih Tekke's Resignation After Europa League Exit
Trabzonspor have turned down head coach Fatih Tekke’s “emotional” resignation after their Europa League collapse, choosing stability over shock in the wake of a brutal European exit.
The Turkish side, who stunned the game this summer by signing Mohamed Salah, were thrashed 4-0 by Ferencvaros in Hungary on Thursday night, losing the play-off 5-0 on aggregate. It was a humbling defeat for a club that had spent the close season trying to announce itself as a serious continental force.
Tekke, who guided Trabzonspor to third place in the Super Lig last season, offered his resignation in the aftermath of the loss. The 48-year-old moved quickly, clearly shaken by the manner of the exit.
The club moved just as quickly to stop him walking away.
On Friday morning, Trabzonspor rejected his offer to quit, stressing that Tekke’s decision came from the “intense emotional impact” of the Europa League elimination rather than any long-term breakdown in trust. In other words: a reaction, not a plan.
So Tekke stays, and the season does not pause for reflection. Instead of the Europa League, Trabzonspor will now drop into the Europa Conference League, where they will discover their six league-phase opponents on Friday. The stage is smaller, but the scrutiny will be fierce.
This is not a low-profile squad anymore. The seven-time Turkish champions have spent the summer assembling one of the most eye-catching groups in their recent history. Salah and Fabinho, both Premier League title winners, have arrived to headline the project. Andre Onana has also rejoined on loan from Manchester United, adding further star power and expectation.
Salah’s move, at 34, was one of the shocks of the window. The Egypt international mutually agreed to end his contract at Liverpool at the end of last season, walking away as one of the club’s greatest-ever forwards. Only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt sit above him in the Reds’ scoring charts; Salah hit 257 goals in 442 appearances after joining from Roma in 2017, rewriting modern Liverpool history in the process.
Now he is in Trabzon, wearing different colours, asked to carry a different kind of weight.
He has already started. Salah scored his first two goals for his new club in a 2-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir on Saturday, a quick reminder of what he still brings: timing, movement, and ruthless finishing. That league performance briefly lifted the mood before Ferencvaros tore it apart.
So the picture is clear. A superstar frontman, a rebuilt squad, a coach who tried to resign and was told to stay, and a club knocked off its European stride before the real autumn nights have even begun.
The Conference League will not offer the glamour Trabzonspor imagined when they signed Salah, Fabinho and brought back Onana. But it will offer something else: a test of whether this ambitious project can absorb a heavy blow and still march towards the season it believes it deserves.
