Tottenham Pursue Cody Gakpo and Savinho in Transfer Talks

Tottenham’s attacking rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi is starting to take shape, and it has two clear focal points: Cody Gakpo and Savinho.

Both names are firmly on the table. Both are being worked on. And crucially, Spurs are not putting all their energy into just one outcome.

Spurs juggle twin attacking targets

The message coming out of the current discussions is blunt: Tottenham are “actively working on both” Gakpo and Savinho. That’s not the language of a club waiting around for the market to settle. It’s the stance of a side trying to create leverage, options and pressure points as the window unfolds.

Right now, Savinho is the cleaner route.

Talks over the Manchester City winger are described as more advanced, and there is a strong suggestion he has made his preference clear: he wants Tottenham. When a player of his profile pushes in that direction, the buying club’s position hardens. Spurs know it. City know it too.

Savinho offers exactly what De Zerbi’s attack has lacked at times: raw pace, direct running, and a constant threat in one-on-one situations. He fits the brief for greater dynamism in wide areas and would immediately raise the ceiling of Tottenham’s forward line.

Gakpo: opportunity wrapped in Liverpool’s uncertainty

Gakpo is a different kind of play. The interest from Spurs is real, but the deal sits behind a much more complicated set of dominoes at Liverpool.

The Dutch international could be available after a difficult spell at Anfield, yet Liverpool are in no hurry to thin out their attacking options. Any serious movement on Gakpo hinges on what happens with their own targets, most notably Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye.

Liverpool’s stance is clear enough: they “don’t want to commit to that sale” while their incoming business out wide remains unresolved. Barcola is central to that puzzle, a pursuit described as expensive, complex and with “no guarantee at this stage that it goes through.”

So Tottenham wait. Not passively, but with intent. They are monitoring every development, effectively holding their position until Liverpool send the signal that Gakpo can leave. If Barcola or another wide option comes through the door at Anfield, the path for Gakpo could suddenly open.

Savinho offers speed; the Gakpo deal needs patience

This split in tempo defines Spurs’ window right now.

Savinho looks like the faster deal. He wants the move, Tottenham want his profile, and City know they are dealing with a motivated player. That combination usually accelerates negotiations.

Gakpo, by contrast, demands patience. Tottenham see a player who has operated at a high level, who can cover multiple roles across the front line and who might be unlocked by a fresh start. But they also see a selling club that will only engage properly once its own house is in order.

That is why both tracks remain open. Spurs are not choosing between them yet. They are pushing on Savinho while staying close to any shift in Liverpool’s position on Gakpo.

Competition, price and the wider market

There are other clubs in the background, at least in theory.

Newcastle United admire Gakpo, but their interest has cooled over the 27-year-old’s price. Bayern Munich, who previously looked at the forward, have not come back to the table. There is talk of “interest from other Premier League clubs,” though nothing that resembles a concrete move.

For Tottenham, that creates a window of opportunity. Gakpo is on the radar, but not the subject of a full-scale bidding war. Savinho is moving more quickly, with Spurs currently best placed. De Zerbi wants attacking upgrades in before the new campaign starts, and these two names sit at the heart of that plan.

The dream scenario for supporters is obvious: land both. That would reshape the front line and give De Zerbi the depth and variety needed to sustain a season on multiple fronts.

Whether Spurs can pull that off is another matter. But this time, at least, they look ready to act like a club that intends to find out.
