Toby Collyer Joins West Brom for £7.6m Deal

Toby Collyer has chosen West Brom – and a reunion with James Morrison – as he prepares to leave Manchester United in a deal that could rise to £7.6m.

The 22-year-old midfielder is set to join the Championship club for an initial £3m fee, with significant add-ons agreed and United inserting a hefty 40% sell-on clause into the agreement.

This has not been a straightforward decision. Collyer had been weighing up offers from both West Brom and Hull City, the two clubs where he spent last season on loan. At one stage, West Brom looked in control. Then Hull surged to the front of the queue and appeared ready to close the deal.

Morrison changed that.

The West Brom boss, impressed by Collyer’s impact during the first half of last season at The Hawthorns, made a strong push to bring him back permanently. Collyer’s game time was restricted by injury, but he did enough in those spells on the pitch to convince Morrison he could be a central figure in his midfield rebuild.

The promise of that role has proved crucial. With minutes on the pitch a key concern at this stage of his career, the expectation of increased playing time under Morrison is understood to have been decisive in Collyer’s final call.

Now the former United prospect heads back to The Hawthorns, this time not as a loanee fighting for a chance, but as a long-term investment expected to grow in value – and, if United’s sell-on clause is anything to go by, one they believe is far from finished.
