Swansea City’s Strong Start Proves Championship Contender Status

Vitor Matos insists Swansea City’s flying start to the season is proof they can go toe-to-toe with anyone in the Championship.

Swansea surged back up to second place – behind leaders West Ham only on goal difference – with a controlled 3-1 win over struggling Burnley on Saturday, a result that felt as much like a statement as it did a scoreline.

Adam Idah, Moussa Yeo and Zan Vipotnik all struck as the Swans delivered exactly the response Matos wanted after their first league defeat of the campaign at Southampton in midweek. Any hint of a wobble was pushed firmly aside.

The head coach even claimed after the game that he did not know where Swansea sit in the table. What he does know, and was happy to spell out, is what this reshaped squad is starting to show.

"I think we have a team who can compete against every team in the league," Matos said, underlining the belief building inside the camp.

"That's what we want. When we can compete against everyone, we know that on that day, at that particular time, we can have a proper performance and beat any opponent.

"If that happens all the time, we don't know, but we will work our socks off for that."

The message is clear: Swansea are not talking about promotion races or long-term forecasts. Matos wants a side that turns up, scraps, and backs its football against anyone, every single week.

For now, the table says they are exactly where that attitude can take them.
