Sunderland Secure Robin Roefs Until 2031 for Europa League Push

Sunderland have moved quickly to secure one of their most important players, with goalkeeper Robin Roefs signing a new deal that keeps him at the Stadium of Light until 2031.

The 21-year-old’s presence in goal underpinned the Black Cats’ surge to seventh place last season, a finish that delivered Europa League football and a sense that the club is finally building towards something substantial again.

For sporting director Florent Ghisolfi, this was a statement renewal as much as a routine contract extension.

“We are very pleased that Robin has committed his future to Sunderland until 2031,” he told the club’s official channels, stressing that Roefs’ value runs far deeper than his saves. “He had a strong first season with us, but what we value just as much is his humility, his willingness to work and his desire to keep improving every day. These qualities reflect the identity and the standards we want to build at this Club.”

That identity has started at the back. Roefs’ commanding performances, his handling in crowded penalty areas and his calmness under pressure turned tight games Sunderland’s way and gave a young side a platform to attack. Seventh place was the reward. Europe the bonus.

Ghisolfi made it clear the goalkeeper sits at the heart of Sunderland’s long-term plan.

“Robin is proud to represent Sunderland, and we are equally proud to have him with us. He is an important part of this team and of our future, but we all know there is still a lot of work ahead of us. We want to keep progressing together, with ambition and humility.”

Roefs sounds just as invested. For him, Wearside already feels like more than a stop on the way.

“Sunderland has felt like home from the moment I arrived,” he said. “Last season was incredible, finishing seventh and qualifying for Europe, but we all feel there's so much more to come from this squad of players, so we're now focused on what's next. I'm really excited about playing my part in the bright future of this football club.”
