Sunderland Nears £30m Deal for Malick Fofana as European Ambitions Rise

Sunderland are on the verge of a statement signing, having agreed a deal worth just under £30m for Lyon winger Malick Fofana.

The 21-year-old Belgium forward is travelling to England for a medical and is expected to sign a five-year contract, underlining the club’s intent ahead of their first European campaign in 51 years.

The agreement will see Sunderland pay an initial £25.6m to Lyon, with a further £4.3m potentially due in add-ons.

For a club only one season removed from promotion back to the top flight, it is a bold move and a clear investment in a player they believe can grow with them.

Fofana, who came through at KAA Gent before joining Lyon in 2024, is understood to be enthusiastic about the project on Wearside and the chance to play Europa League football. Sunderland’s qualification for the competition has changed the tone of their recruitment — and this deal is the clearest sign yet.

Arsenal had pushed hard to bring Fofana to the Premier League, but the champions failed to reach an agreement with Lyon over the fee. Sunderland stepped in, negotiated a package the French club were happy with, and are now set to reap the benefit.

The winger will not be the only new face in the dressing room. He is poised to link up with Kevin Danso, with the Austria defender due to arrive from Tottenham on an initial loan that includes an option to buy.

Sunderland have already moved decisively in the market, adding defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, along with midfielder Jules Ahoka, after finishing seventh in their first season back among the elite.

From survival talk to £30m deals and a Europa League campaign on the horizon, Sunderland are building like a club that expects this rise to last.
