Sunderland's Bold Move for Jack Grealish: A New Chapter
Sunderland have made a bold play for Jack Grealish, submitting an ambitious loan offer to Manchester City that would see the 30-year-old winger drop into a Europa League project on Wearside.
According to The Athletic, the proposal from the Stadium of Light includes City continuing to pay a substantial chunk of Grealish’s sizeable wages. Crucially, the offer is understood to contain an option for Sunderland to make the deal permanent next summer, when his current contract at the Etihad is due to expire.
If City agree, it would mark a dramatic turn in a career that once carried a £100m price tag and a starring role in a Treble-winning side. Now, Grealish is searching for minutes and a reset.
From Treble cornerstone to the fringes
Grealish arrived at Manchester City from Aston Villa in a landmark move, going on to make 159 appearances in all competitions. His peak came in the 2022-23 season, when he was a regular presence on the left flank as City swept the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.
That version of Grealish felt untouchable. Fifty games, constant starts, a vital cog in Pep Guardiola’s machine.
The picture now is very different.
By the 2024-25 campaign his role had shrunk to just seven league starts. The slide became impossible to ignore when he was left out of the squad entirely for the final league game of last season against Fulham. Guardiola insisted at the time it was “nothing personal”, yet Grealish was then omitted from the Club World Cup squad as well.
This season has brought little change. He has come off the bench in both of City’s opening fixtures, featuring in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal and again as a second-half substitute in Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League win over Bournemouth. Impact player, not automatic starter.
City’s stance has been clear for months. Reports in June indicated they were prepared to let their former record signing leave, on loan or permanently. Sunderland are now trying to seize that opportunity.
Sunderland’s European push
Regis Le Bris wants experience and personality in his Sunderland squad as they prepare for Europa League football. Grealish ticks both boxes.
The Black Cats’ interest in the England international is part of a wider recruitment drive aimed at giving Le Bris the depth to cope with domestic and European demands. Sunderland have already moved decisively in other areas of the pitch: experienced full-back Thomas Meunier has arrived, while youngster Dayann Methalie has been added to strengthen the defence. In midfield, Jules Ahoka has been brought in to increase competition and options.
On the wings, the club are not stopping at Grealish. Sunderland are also working on a deal for Marseille’s Igor Paixao. The 26-year-old Brazilian scored 12 goals in Ligue 1 last season, and personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block. The hold-up lies between the clubs, with an agreement with Marseille still to be finalised.
If both wide targets were to land, Le Bris would suddenly have a very different attacking landscape to work with.
A career at a crossroads
For Grealish, Sunderland’s offer arrives after a bruising spell. He spent all of last season on loan at Everton under David Moyes, where he registered two goals and six assists in 22 appearances before a stress fracture in his foot in January cut his campaign short.
Everton had an option to buy him permanently for around £50m. They walked away from it.
That decision left Grealish back at City, but with his status diminished and his future uncertain. A player who once dictated games for Aston Villa and then slotted into one of the greatest sides English football has seen now finds himself waiting for opportunities off the bench.
A move to Sunderland would be a step into a different kind of pressure: leading a Europa League charge, carrying expectation at a club eager to re-establish itself on the continental stage, and doing it under a coach who wants his experience, not just his name.
City are listening. Sunderland have made their move. The next decision belongs to Grealish – does he stay on the periphery of a superclub, or gamble on becoming the heartbeat of a new project in the North East?
