St Nicks stared at a straight knockout in Macroom and refused to blink.
Needing a win to stay alive in the McCarthy Insurance Group Cork Premier JFC, the city club dug deep and then some, seeing off Kilmacabea by 2-10 to 1-10 to punch their ticket to the knockout stages.
Kilmacabea arrived with a safety net. A draw would have been enough for them. They played like it early on.
Eamon Shanahan and Ian Jennings led the charge, clipping scores with assurance as the West Cork side settled much quicker. By the quarter-hour, Kilmacabea were 0-5 to 0-2 in front and dictating the tempo, Shanahan in particular looking razor sharp from placed balls and play.
St Nicks needed a moment. Robert Downey provided it.
A rock at the back for the Cork hurlers, Downey reminded everyone he can play a bit of football too. On 18 minutes he surged through and unleashed a thunderous shot to the net, a rocket that transformed the mood and dragged Nicks right back into the contest.
The goal lit a fire. St Nicks started to win more ball, tackles bit harder, and the city side began to turn territory into chances. On 27 minutes, the comeback gathered real force when Conor McCarthy finished clinically from close range for their second goal, suddenly flipping the scoreboard and the narrative.
Kilmacabea, though, refused to wilt. Jennings produced a fine individual goal before the break, weaving through to finish and haul his side level. At half time, nothing separated them: St Nicks 2-3 Kilmacabea 1-6. One team playing for survival, the other for security. All square.
The pattern stayed tight after the restart. Scores were traded, neither side able to land the decisive punch. Shanahan kept Kilmacabea moving, his accuracy a constant outlet as the tension cranked up. For St Nicks, James O’Sullivan and McCarthy answered, nudging the scoreboard along and keeping their season alive with every swing of the boot.
Midway through the second half, the stakes were written on the board: 2-6 to 1-9, level again, both teams on the brink.
The closing stages demanded nerve. St Nicks found it first.
O’Sullivan, increasingly influential, struck a superb two-point score to edge them in front. It felt big. It was. The same man tagged on another point shortly after, stretching the gap, before Dave Dunlea fisted over to push the lead out to four. From clinging on, Nicks were suddenly in command.
Kilmacabea threw what they had left at the game. Former Cork forward Damien Gore entered the fray late on, and Shanahan clipped yet another score to set up a frantic finish. The pressure rose, but the city men held their shape and their composure.
They were not letting this one slip. Not with a quarter-final place on the line.
When the final whistle sounded, St Nicks had their win, their statement, and a quarter-final showdown with Kinsale to look forward to.
