St Johnstone Sign Joel Cotterill from Swansea City

St Johnstone have bolstered their midfield with the capture of highly rated youngster Joel Cotterill from Swansea City for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old has signed a one-year deal that runs through to the summer of 2027, giving the Perth club a long runway to develop a player many in Wales have tracked closely since his academy days.

Cotterill came through the ranks at Swansea and made his senior debut in 2022, before being sent out to learn the hard way in the English lower leagues. Spells at Stockport County, Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers toughened him up and gave him a first taste of the physical demands of senior football.

The real audition for this move, though, came last season.

Sent north of the border for the second half of the campaign, Cotterill joined Dundee and slotted straight into the Scottish Premiership, making 11 league appearances and scoring once. Those months in dark blue clearly left a mark.

"I had a call with the gaffer on Monday and he told me everything about the club," Cotterill told the club’s media, outlining how quickly the move came together.

He did his homework too. "I watched the game against Dundee on Wednesday night – and I saw how the team wants to play."

That matters to a midfielder shaped by Swansea’s possession-first philosophy.

"Growing up at Swansea, it was always a team with the ball. I feel my biggest strength is being in possession and making things happen. I also like to drive forward and like to think I can be powerful with the ball."

St Johnstone are banking on exactly that: a player comfortable dictating play, but willing to carry the ball and break lines when space opens up.

His loan circuit has already taken him through a variety of dressing rooms and styles. Cotterill believes that experience has hardened him for what comes next.

"I've had different challenges out on loan. I think I've adapted previously and I've already got a taste for playing in the Scottish Premiership.

It can be demanding and the games come thick and fast, but I'll make sure I'm ready for it and up for the challenge."

Now, with a permanent home in Perth and a multi-year deal behind him, Cotterill’s challenge is clear: turn promise and tidy loan spells into week-in, week-out influence in the heart of a Premiership midfield.
