Southampton in Control as Swansea Seeks Redemption
Southampton 2-0 Swansea, and at last a crack in the Saints’ armour.
Zan Vipotnik goes down at the far post, wrestling with James Bree, and the referee points straight to the spot. No hesitation. Vipotnik had been clearly held as he attacked the cross, and suddenly a game that looked like drifting away from Swansea offers them a route back.
Moments earlier, Michael Duff had already rolled the dice. Ronald came on for Joseph Opoku as Swansea searched for a spark that had been missing for most of the night. Now the substitute and his teammates have exactly what they wanted: a penalty and a sliver of belief.
The question is whether they can do anything with it.
Burnley on top, Wrexham below par
At the Racecourse, Wrexham trail Burnley 0-1 and know they’ve got away with it being just the one.
Phil Parkinson reacts at the break. Oliver Rathbone and Callum O'Hare come on for the second half, with Lewis O'Brien and Josh Windass making way. Windass had taken a knock and needed treatment before half-time, his withdrawal more enforced than tactical.
Waynne Phillips, watching on for BBC Radio Wales, did not sugar-coat it. Burnley, he said, will be delighted. Wrexham simply “haven't been on it,” and he expects “a few harsh words” in that home dressing room. The hosts need an instant response or this could slip quickly out of reach.
Sheffield United under pressure at Blackburn
Blackburn 1-2 Sheff Utd and the visitors have already been forced into a reshuffle.
Tyrese Campbell replaced Rhys Norrington-Davies at the interval, and Sheffield United have spent the opening exchanges of the second half defending deep. Tom Atcheson whipped in a fierce, low cross from the right, and only a scrambling intervention from Japhet Tanganga stopped Blackburn levelling. Tanganga did just enough, stretching to cut out the danger as Ewood Park sensed an equaliser.
Blackburn have come out with intent. United are hanging onto that slender advantage.
Four-goal thriller at Bolton as Bowen strikes again
Half-time at Bolton and it’s breathless. Bolton 2-2 West Ham after a first half that swung one way, then the other.
Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring, finally registering his first league goal from open play this season. His only other league strike came from the penalty spot in last week’s win over Wolves, but this one came in trademark fashion, the West Ham captain punishing a lapse and giving the visitors the lead.
Bolton refused to fold. Ethan Erhahon dragged them level, and when Ruben Rodrigues buried a penalty, the home crowd roared at the turnaround. West Ham looked rattled for a spell, but they found a response of their own. From an Arne Engels free-kick, Konstantinos Mavropanos rose to nod in the equaliser and restore parity.
Right on the whistle, Sam Dalby nearly tore the script up again, forcing Mads Hermansen into a sharp save with the last action of a pulsating half. For the neutral, it has been a treat. For the two managers, probably a headache.
Into the second half, Bowen is still at the heart of everything. He tries to twist free in the box, held up at the last second, then retrieves the ball and swings in a cross from the right that sails just too high for the bearded Pablo to attack. West Ham sense there’s more in this for them. So do Bolton.
Phil Brown, on BBC Radio Manchester, reserved special praise for one man in white. He hailed the manager’s bold changes, but insisted Josh Sheehan is undroppable on this form, calling it “what a performance” from the midfielder so far.
Cardiff chasing again as Stoke smell three in a row
At Cardiff City Stadium, the pattern of the season is repeating itself. Cardiff 0-1 Stoke at half-time, and for the sixth time in eight games, Cardiff have conceded the opening goal.
Mark Poyser, calling it for BBC Radio Wales, summed up the frustration. Cardiff have attacked with intent, Ollie Tanner even cracking the post, yet the same defensive frailty has cost them. Wing-back Ben Johnson wriggled between two defenders and punished slack marking to score the only goal of the game so far.
Stoke are on course for a third straight win. Cardiff stare at the prospect of a third straight defeat. The margin is one, but the stakes in this second half feel far higher.
Championship night heats up
While Bolton and West Ham grabbed their breath and their half-time oranges, the rest of the evening’s fixtures were already back underway. Five other games have resumed, each with its own tension and storyline building.
Fans will have their own verdicts on how it’s going so far. In Swansea’s case, the answer might depend on what happens from twelve yards.
