Savinho Joins Tottenham in £75 Million Deal
Tottenham have smashed through the £300 million barrier in this transfer window, landing Brazilian winger Savinho from Manchester City in a deal worth a reported initial £75 million.
The 22-year-old arrives with a price tag that screams marquee signing, even if his time at City never quite caught fire.
A statement signing after a brush with disaster
Spurs, who only just dodged relegation from the Premier League last season, are gambling big on attacking flair to drag them away from the bottom end of the table. Savinho is the latest piece in Roberto De Zerbi’s rebuild, a winger signed to bring speed, risk and a bit of chaos to a team that looked flat and frightened for much of last year.
"It's taken a while but I'm very happy to be here," Savinho said in the club’s announcement. "It's a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world.
"As soon as I spoke to the head coach I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level and I believe we can do that together, as a team."
De Zerbi’s arrival late last season jolted Spurs into life just in time to avoid a first drop into the second tier in 49 years. That escape has now been followed by a full-scale squad overhaul – and a brutal reminder of how far they still have to go.
On the opening weekend, Tottenham’s new era began with a thud: a 3-0 defeat to Brentford.
De Zerbi’s wide weapon
Savinho joins a long list of new faces. Big-money arrivals Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke have already come through the door, while Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka have signed on free transfers.
For De Zerbi, Savinho is not just another body in the squad. He is a tactical weapon.
"Savio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions. He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity," the Italian said.
"We're very pleased to have him with us, and I'm looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team."
Tottenham are paying for potential as much as production. At City, Savinho never truly nailed down a starting place across two seasons, struggling to reproduce the explosive form that first pushed him into the spotlight.
From Girona star to City frustration
Savinho’s route to north London has followed the City Football Group trail. He joined City from Troyes, another CFG club, for £30 million in 2024 after a blistering loan spell at Girona turned heads across Europe.
In Spain, he looked fearless. Direct. Dangerous.
In England, that spark dimmed. Across 84 appearances for City, he scored just seven goals as Pep Guardiola’s side failed to win either the Premier League or the Champions League in the manager’s final two seasons in charge.
City have still protected their upside. Reports suggest they could bank up to an extra £10 million in add-ons if Savinho hits certain targets at Spurs.
And the business between the clubs may not be done. Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush is also expected to swap Manchester for north London before the window closes next week, underlining the growing pipeline between the two sides.
For Tottenham, though, the equation is simple. They have spent heavily, they have backed De Zerbi, and they have handed him a winger built to run at defenders and drag games open.
Now Savinho has to turn price into product – and help ensure last season’s relegation scare was a one-off, not a warning of what’s coming.
