Santos Lift FIFA Transfer Ban with Neymar-Linked Deal
Santos have finally broken free of their FIFA transfer embargo, clearing a crippling R$12 million (£1.7m/$2.3m) debt owed to Monaco for midfielder Jean Lucas and reopening the door to the market at a moment of real sporting danger.
The ban, in place since July, had frozen all incoming business and left the Brazilian giants exposed with a thin squad and a relegation battle looming. The escape route arrived through NR Sports, the agency tied to Neymar’s family, which stepped in with an immediate cash injection to settle the outstanding bill.
In return, Santos and NR Sports will share control over the negotiation and commercialisation of currently unsold kit sponsorship space, turning vacant shirt real estate into a lifeline.
“The operation was made possible thanks to the support of NR Sports, through which the Club received an immediate financial injection,” the club confirmed in an official statement on Thursday, adding that Santos are now “once again clear to operate in the transfer market.”
It is a short-term fix for a club still carrying an estimated £13m in overall debt, but a vital one. The embargo had left the Peixe exposed, unable to reinforce while results faltered and the pressure mounted in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
Now the market door swings open again, and it does so with a clear first target in sight.
Arthur move back on as survival fight bites
With the sanction lifted, Santos can push ahead with the signing of former Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo, identified as their priority reinforcement, according to Diario Sport.
The Brazilian playmaker, once heralded as a long-term solution in Europe’s elite midfields, is now being lined up as an immediate on‑pitch solution back home. Santos see him as the man to steady their possession, dictate tempo and inject some control into a side that has struggled to keep opponents at arm’s length.
The timing could hardly be more critical. Santos sit just two points clear of the relegation zone, clinging to a fragile cushion as the season tightens around them. Depth has been an issue, quality in key areas even more so. Arthur’s arrival would not solve the club’s financial mess, but it could transform their chances of staying up.
