Sam Edozie Submits Transfer Request to Southampton

Sam Edozie has submitted a transfer request to Southampton, insisting he must be allowed to leave the club before Tuesday night’s deadline.

The 23-year-old winger went public with his stance in a statement on Instagram, revealing he has received “multiple offers” from clubs across Europe and accusing Southampton of making any move difficult with their demands.

“Last summer I had the opportunity to move elsewhere, but the club did not allow me to leave,” Edozie wrote.

“The same happened again in January. This summer, there have once again been multiple offers from clubs across Europe.”

According to Edozie, the sticking point has been Southampton’s financial conditions. He claimed the club have “requested as much as 50% of any future transfer fee, which has made those opportunities extremely difficult to pursue”.

Frustration over game time

Edozie joined Southampton from Manchester City in September 2022, seen then as a high-upside wide player with pace and directness. Since arriving on the south coast he has made 29 starts and 57 substitute appearances.

It has not been enough for him.

He said he was not getting “the minutes I need” at the club and framed his transfer request as a decision driven by career urgency rather than impatience.

“A football career is short, and I believe it is important I now have the opportunity to go somewhere I can play regularly, continue to develop and make the most of my career as a player,” he said.

Future in doubt despite loan move

Edozie is currently out on loan at Belgian side Anderlecht for the 2024-2025 season, a move designed to give him more consistent football. His latest statement, though, makes it clear his issues lie with his long-term status at Southampton rather than just one season’s minutes.

With the deadline looming and the player’s stance now public, the next 48 hours will reveal whether Southampton hold their ground or finally cash in on a winger determined to take control of his career.
