Wayne Rooney knows exactly what it feels like to be the teenage sensation everyone is trying to keep. That’s why his warning over Manchester United starlet Gabriel lands with extra weight.
The 15-year-old forward, regarded as one of the brightest talents in the club’s academy, has formally asked to leave Old Trafford. For United, Rooney says, losing him would be “a massive blow.”

Gabriel, who turns 16 next month, has lit up United’s youth ranks and already forced his name onto the radar of Europe’s giants. Both Madrid and Barca are tracking his situation as uncertainty over his future deepens.

“I have seen JJ grow up, he has been in [my son] Kai's team,” Rooney said on the Stick To Football podcast on Disney+. “Anyone close to it knew that was coming.”
Rooney stressed that United have pushed hard to keep him.
“In fairness to Manchester United they have done everything, absolutely everything, to keep him at the club,” he said. “The club have treated him probably differently to the other players because he is such a special player.”
That, Rooney added, is a treatment he recognises from his own days as a prodigy at Everton.
“I know, I recognise that, because I was that player at Everton. I was getting that treatment at Everton. As a club, you need to do [it] to try to keep the better players.”
A special talent at a crossroads
For Rooney, the sadness is obvious. This isn’t just about losing a prospect. It’s about losing this prospect.
“It's disappointing because he is such a top player and a lovely kid,” he said. “You never know whether it's gone too far or whether there is a chance for him to stay.”
Rooney’s assessment of Gabriel’s ability is emphatic. He highlights the teenager’s technique, poise and knack for scoring even when pushed up age groups.
“He is a top player,” Rooney said. “His ability, his balance, he has shown he can go up the ages and score goals. The next step is first-team football where it's different, and you never know until you're in there.
“But he's such a special talent who understands the game really well. At some point this season he would [have] made his debut for the first-team, I'd imagine, so that's where it's disappointing.”
That line cuts to the heart of United’s frustration. In Rooney’s eyes, Gabriel wasn’t just one for the future; he was on the verge of breaking into the present.

Despite the transfer request, United have not given up. Inside the club, there remains hope that the situation can be repaired and that Gabriel can be persuaded to commit his long-term future to Old Trafford.
