Romero Becomes Argentina's New Captain as Messi Era Ends

The Lionel Messi era with Argentina is officially over. The captain’s armband now belongs to Christian Romero.

The Atlético Madrid defender has been confirmed as the new captain of the Argentine national team after Messi and long-serving vice-captain Nicolás Otamendi retired from international football following the 2026 World Cup. With both senior leaders stepping away, the hierarchy shifted and the responsibility moved directly to Romero.

This is not entirely new territory for him. Romero has already worn the armband three times, leading Argentina out when the regular captains were unavailable. Now the role is permanent, and it arrives with the full weight of a generation-defining legacy.

At 58 caps and four goals for the national team, Romero’s numbers tell only part of the story. He has already lived the highs: a 2022 World Cup winner and a two-time Copa América champion, embedded in the spine of the side that restored Argentina to the summit of world football.

The Argentine Football Association has decided that Messi’s farewell will not pass quietly. Plans are in place for a large-scale tribute to honour his international career after his announcement that he is retiring from the national team, a final curtain call for the captain who defined an era.

Away from the selección, Messi is also close to a deal to acquire Spanish club Eldense, a move that would mark the next chapter of his football life from the boardroom rather than the pitch.
