Rodri Calls for Julian Alvarez to Join Barcelona
Rodri has barely unpacked his bags in Barcelona, but he already knows exactly who he wants alongside him at Camp Nou: Julian Alvarez.
The Spain international, fresh from his move from Manchester to Catalonia, has been unabashed in his admiration for his former team-mate. Asked whether he would like to see Alvarez in Blaugrana colours, Rodri did not bother with diplomacy.
“Would I sign him here? Of course,” he told Mundo Deportivo. “I think he is a sensational player. I would take him here without hesitation. I had the chance to play with him for two years, and I think he is an incredible player, truly incredible.”
Those two seasons together in the Premier League gave Rodri a close-up view of Alvarez’s rise. The Argentine’s work rate, movement and knack for decisive moments left a lasting impression, and the midfielder’s words carry weight in a Barcelona side still reshaping its identity.
Alvarez’s name dominated the summer rumour mill. He was on the radar of several European heavyweights, with both Barca and Real Madrid circling. “He has almost played more often as a number 10 than as a number 9, even though he initially came from a number 9 position,” Rodri explained. “But he has also adapted to a role where he can play as an attacking midfielder, a playmaker, and he has even played matches as a central midfielder. He is truly a spectacular player.”
That evolution is central to Alvarez’s appeal. Once a classic centre-forward, he now drifts between the lines, links play, presses from the front and fills gaps across the attacking third. For a club like Barcelona, constantly searching for forwards who can both score and think at the speed of their positional game, that profile is gold.
Atletico, though, have no interest in turning this into a shop window. For now, Alvarez is locked in on Diego Simeone’s plans. The 26-year-old has already featured twice in La Liga this season, and Simeone will lean heavily on his cutting edge as Atletico attempt to launch a serious title assault.
The noise around his future will not fade easily. Rodri’s public endorsement only adds fuel to a story that refuses to die down. Barcelona continue to scan the market for top-tier attacking reinforcements, balancing financial constraints with sporting ambition.
