Real Madrid Targets Martin Zubimendi Amid Arsenal Doubts

Real Madrid have moved back into position for Martin Zubimendi, and this time Jose Mourinho is driving the chase.

The Arsenal midfielder, who only arrived in north London last summer in a €65 million deal from Real Sociedad, is again on Madrid’s radar, with Mourinho pushing hard for a player he believes can tighten his midfield and dictate games.

Zubimendi’s Arsenal role under the microscope

When Arsenal beat Europe’s elite to Zubimendi a year ago, the plan was clear: he would grow into a central pillar of Mikel Arteta’s project, the calm organiser at the base of midfield.

That vision has started to blur.

The arrival of Bruno Guimaraes to further bolster Arsenal’s engine room has triggered fresh doubts in Zubimendi’s camp about his long-term status at the Emirates. Minutes, hierarchy, influence – all of it is suddenly up for debate.

According to Graeme Bailey, conversations have already taken place between the player’s representatives and interested parties as they gauge what comes next. At 27, Zubimendi is entering what should be his peak years, and he is understood to be questioning whether he still holds the key role he expected when he left Real Sociedad.

Inside Arsenal, the stance is measured rather than desperate. The club are not forcing him towards the exit, but they are open to listening. A serious offer would not be dismissed out of hand.

That stance has cracked the door open. Real Madrid have been admirers for a long time; now they sense a possible opportunity.

Mourinho’s midfield blueprint

Mourinho’s vision is straightforward: he wants more authority and experience in the holding role. Zubimendi, with his composure on the ball and tactical discipline, fits the profile almost perfectly.

Madrid’s interest predates Mourinho, but his backing gives the pursuit a different edge. When the Portuguese coach identifies a piece for his structure, clubs tend to move.

Contact regarding the midfielder is said to have been made, and voices close to the situation suggest Zubimendi would be highly attracted by the chance to step into the Santiago Bernabeu dressing room after just one year in the Premier League.

The attraction is mutual. The obstacle is money.

The €65 million question

Arsenal paid heavily to prise Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, and that fee still shapes the conversation. The Gunners are not expected to make any departure simple or cheap. They invested €65 million only last summer and will not want to take a hit on a player still in his prime.

That is Madrid’s biggest problem. Before anything else, they must discover Arsenal’s asking price and decide whether they are willing to match the financial demands for a midfielder who has had just a single season in England.

Mourinho has given the green light. Zubimendi is keen. Arsenal are listening, but only at the right number.

Now the decision sits in Madrid’s boardroom: push hard for a ready-made anchor, or walk away from a deal that could reshape two midfields at once.
