Raúl Asencio Returns to Real Madrid Squad Under Mourinho
José Mourinho has named his Real Madrid squad for Saturday’s league trip to Rayo Vallecano, and one name jumps off the page: Raúl Asencio.
The young Spanish defender returns after more than a month on the sidelines, finally shaking off a complicated muscular problem in the rectus femoris that was followed by a setback in his shin. It has been around six weeks of frustration, rehab, and doubt. Now he is back in the list at a time when Mourinho’s calendar is packed and the margin for error in central defence is shrinking.
A first chance under Mourinho
Asencio has yet to play a single minute under Mourinho. Until now, he has existed on the periphery of the Portuguese coach’s plans, a project rather than a piece. That begins to change with this call-up.
His return to full group training in recent days, and his ability to complete sessions at normal intensity before the Rayo clash, convinced the medical staff and Mourinho that he is ready to compete. The “green light” is more than a medical verdict; it is an open door. With league games crammed into midweek slots and the squad stretched, every defensive option suddenly matters.
For Mourinho, it is one more body in a crucial area of the pitch. For Asencio, it is something else entirely: a shot at a Real Madrid career that looked like it might be slipping away before it had really begun.
A turbulent summer, on and off the pitch
This call-up also draws a line under a chaotic summer for Asencio.
Before his injury, the defender had been close to leaving the club, his future hovering in the air. The muscular problem, then the shin issue, froze any move. Instead of a transfer, he got weeks in the treatment room and a growing sense that time was passing him by.

Mourinho did not hide his displeasure. The coach publicly reminded him of the standards required at Real Madrid, saying: “A Real Madrid player remains a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day. What you do outside the club can harm your reputation and the club's reputation, and I am not happy.” It was a warning shot as much as a reprimand.
Now the noise fades, at least for a moment. Fit again, Asencio can finally shift his focus back to the pitch, where he still has everything to prove. He returns with a point to make, and a manager to convince.
Key absences and a stacked squad
Not everyone makes the trip. Éder Militão, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo are all left out of the squad, absences that underline why Asencio’s return in central defence is timely.
