Rasmus Ankersen Steps Down as Southampton Director

Rasmus Ankersen has stepped down from his role as a director at Southampton, drawing a clear line under his day‑to‑day involvement at St Mary’s while remaining in the club’s ownership structure.

The 42-year-old, a key figure within Sport Republic, will no longer sit on the Saints board but stays on as a co-owner of the Championship side. It marks a formal scaling back that, in reality, has been unfolding for some time.

Ankersen’s influence at Southampton has already faded in recent years as his attention shifted to Turkey. As president of Goztepe, another club in the Sport Republic portfolio, his focus has been pulled towards trying to revive a team currently bottom of the Turkish Super Lig. Even so, he has still had a hand in Southampton’s recruitment, helping shape the squad during a period of major turnover.

Before arriving at Southampton, Ankersen built his reputation at Brentford between 2015 and 2021, a spell that culminated in the Bees’ promotion to the Premier League. That success helped make him one of the most talked-about executives in European football, and his move into the multi-club model with Sport Republic was seen as a natural next step.

Sport Republic itself is controlled by Serbian businessman Dragan Solak, who holds the majority stake in Southampton. The group also owns a majority share in French side Valenciennes, alongside their controlling interest in Goztepe, underlining a strategy built around spreading investment – and ideas – across several clubs.

Ankersen’s resignation from the Southampton board trims one layer from that structure. The real question now is how sharply the club’s direction will change without one of its original architects in the room.
