PSG Finalizes Deal for Mika Godts as Liverpool Eyes Barcola

Paris Saint-Germain have moved decisively in the market, reaching a verbal agreement with Ajax to sign highly rated winger Mika Godts in a package worth €55m (£46.9m).

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported on X that PSG have verbally agreed the fee after sending a new official bid, with only the paperwork still to be completed. The deal, first flagged as an exclusive in July, is now on the brink of being signed off.

Godts is expected to walk into a revamped PSG attack that is also set to include Barcelona forward Ferran Torres, with a separate agreement in place for the Spaniard. Luis Enrique wanted depth and variety in his frontline. On this evidence, he is getting it.

And when one door opens in Paris, another usually closes.

Barcola’s exit door creaks open

The double swoop for Godts and Torres is widely expected to accelerate the departure of Bradley Barcola, a long-term target for Liverpool. PSG’s stance has been firm to this point, with an ideal asking price of around £145m. Liverpool’s internal valuation is understood to sit closer to £100m.

Somewhere between those numbers lies the only figure that matters.

Liverpool have been in regular contact with PSG this week, anticipating exactly this kind of movement at the Parc des Princes. With Godts and Torres poised to arrive – barring any late twist – the French champions now have less reason to dig in over Barcola’s future.

Luis Enrique’s squad suddenly looks heavy in wide areas. The pressure to trim “spare parts” is growing, and that plays directly into Liverpool’s hands.

Liverpool watching Paris – and the clock

From a Merseyside perspective, there is still a lingering question: why were Godts or Torres not seriously pursued as options themselves? Both fit the age and profile Liverpool often like. Both are moving to a club that already has an embarrassment of attacking riches.

But that debate will vanish quickly if Richard Hughes succeeds in prising Barcola out of Paris before the window shuts. The 21-year-old is seen as a headline attacking addition. There is even outside noise around his exciting teammate Ibrahim Mbaye, just 18, as another potential name for the future.

Time, though, is not on Liverpool’s side.

Newcastle away looms in nine days. Pre-season minutes that might have been used to bed in Barcola – or any other major signing – have already slipped through their fingers. Any deal now will require a rapid adaptation period, both tactically and physically.

What the Godts agreement does change is the tempo of the negotiations. With PSG’s frontline now heavily stocked and a verbal pact in place with Ajax, the French club can afford to relax on incomings and turn to outgoings.

Liverpool are waiting on that shift to become concrete. PSG know they may have to climb down from their £145m stance. Liverpool know they may have to edge up from £100m.

The gap is clear. The need on both sides is clearer.

With Godts and Torres almost in the door, the next decisive move in this transfer chain belongs to PSG: hold their nerve on Barcola, or cash in while the market – and Liverpool’s urgency – is at its peak.
