Portsmouth Sign Chelsea Winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen on Loan

Portsmouth have moved to sharpen their wide options with the season-long loan capture of highly rated Chelsea winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen.

The 17-year-old, one of the latest products off Chelsea’s academy conveyor belt, already has a senior appearance to his name – a cameo in the 7-0 FA Cup demolition of Port Vale. It was a brief taste, but enough to mark him out as one to watch in west London.

Chelsea underlined that belief in January when Kavuma-McQueen signed his first professional contract. From there, his rise accelerated. He spent last season on the fringes of the first team, making the bench for Champions League fixtures against Paris St-Germain and Ajax, and earning a place in the match-day squad for Premier League clashes with Liverpool and Tottenham.

That exposure at the top level sits on top of a steady climb through Chelsea’s youth ranks. Kavuma-McQueen has featured regularly for the Under-18s and U21s, showing the versatility to operate off either flank and the kind of direct, aggressive running that catches a manager’s eye.

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho has been open about his desire to add more pace and threat out wide, and sees the teenager as an ideal fit.

“We’ve been in the market for wingers for quite a while and Ryan ticks all the boxes of the profile of player that we want to bring in,” Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent. “He’s quick, direct, can play off both sides and he’s only 17 so that probably tells you how highly we rate him and how highly Chelsea rate him.”

Kavuma-McQueen has also spent time with Chelsea’s first-team squad in pre-season, picking up minutes on their tour and edging closer to the senior picture at Stamford Bridge. Mousinho and his staff have followed that journey closely.

“We’ve tracked him throughout his youth career and he made the step up last year into the 21s side so we’re really excited to get him through the door,” the Portsmouth manager added. “I think he’s going to fit the way that we want to play really well and we’re really pleased to get this one done.”

At Fratton Park, Kavuma-McQueen will join a crowded but intriguing group of wide players, competing and combining with Abu Kamara, Josh Murphy, Harvey Blair, Eoin Kenny and Luke Brooke-Smith. The battle for those starting berths on the flanks has just intensified – and a 17-year-old from Chelsea has been thrown straight into the mix.
