Andre Onana Rejoins Trabzonspor for 2026-27 Season

Andre Onana is heading back to familiar ground. The Cameroon international has officially rejoined Trabzonspor on a second consecutive season-long loan for the 2026-27 campaign, this time again without an option to buy. His parent deal at Manchester United still runs until June 2028, so this is a parking of a major asset, not a farewell.

Onana’s Premier League appeal

Even with his future tied to United on paper and his present in Turkey, Andre Onana’s name refuses to leave Premier League conversations. Speaking to Premier Bet, Quinton Fortune underlined exactly why.

"Andre Onana could be an asset to Chelsea, Newcastle United or Aston Villa in the Premier League," Fortune said, pointing straight at the modern obsession with building from the back. Managers want their goalkeeper to be the first playmaker. Onana fits that brief.

His passing range remains the headline act. "When you’ve got a goalkeeper like Onana who can ping a ball 50, 60 yards to your striker or midfielder and break the lines with his passes, that can make a huge difference, and he’s one of the best at it," Fortune explained.

The technical qualities are not in doubt. The issue is confidence, and for goalkeepers that can vanish in a single moment. "He just needs to find his confidence again now because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake unfortunately the whole world sees it. I hope he can get back to his best because when you need a goalkeeper to play out from the back, he can be outstanding."

For clubs such as Chelsea, Newcastle United and Aston Villa, constantly searching for marginal gains in possession and territory, a keeper who can split lines from 60 yards is a tactical weapon. Onana’s loan to Trabzonspor might feel like a step away from that spotlight, but his profile still screams top-flight England.

Fortune did not stop at goalkeepers. The former South Africa international also weighed in on Chelsea’s summer rebuild and the decision-making of Xabi Alonso at Stamford Bridge.

"Xabi Alonso made some good signings for Chelsea this summer but I wish we could have seen Danny Welbeck return to Manchester United," he admitted to Premier Bet. That line says plenty. While Chelsea move to strengthen their dressing room with experienced voices, Fortune believes United missed an opportunity to bring one of their own back.

By securing Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, Alonso has clearly targeted more than just numbers on a team sheet. "By signing Welbeck and Jordan Henderson he wants to bring in some leaders to set good examples which you need at a club like Chelsea, especially after the experience Alonso had at Real Madrid."

Alonso has lived in one of the most demanding dressing rooms in world football. He knows what it looks like when a squad polices itself, when standards are set internally rather than from the touchline. That experience seems to have shaped his early calls in west London.

"He’s looked at the Chelsea dressing room, felt that it was lacking something, and brought in the players with the right personalities and experience to make a difference in Henderson and Welbeck," Fortune added. "They are not only top, top players but great professionals too."
