Northampton Town Set for New Era with Alexandre Pato Involvement
Northampton Town are on the brink of a new era – with a familiar name from European football’s glamour years at the heart of it.
The League Two club have confirmed they have reached agreement with a consortium that includes former AC Milan, Chelsea and Brazil forward Alexandre Pato over a proposed shareholding acquisition.
Sports Alpha Capital (SAC), the investment group fronting the move, had their proposed deal approved by the Independent Football Regulator (IFR) and the English Football League earlier this month. With those hurdles cleared, the Cobblers say they expect to be “in a position to confirm completion of the process” next week.
The tone from the boardroom is one of relief mixed with anticipation.
“Football club transactions always have many moving parts and often take a little longer than you would hope, but we are thrilled to be moving forward,” said chairman Kelvin Thomas, underlining how drawn-out the process can be at this level.
From SAC’s side, the message is that the heavy lifting is almost done. “We are very happy to have reached formal agreements,” said founding partner Joao Xavier. “Obviously obtaining IFR and EFL approvals was a big step, but this is also a very important milestone, and we look forward to closing next week.”
SAC are not strangers to the lower reaches of the English pyramid. Earlier this year they held talks over a possible takeover of Colchester United, only to walk away after initial discussions. This time, the negotiations have pushed through to formal agreement and regulatory sign-off.
The exact size of SAC’s proposed shareholding in Northampton Town has not been disclosed, but the identities involved give the deal extra weight. Pato is listed by SAC as one of its investors, alongside Gemcorp Capital, a London-based independent investment management firm.
For Cobblers supporters, the headline name is unmistakable. Pato, now 37 and retired from playing since last year, built his reputation during a five-and-a-half-year spell at AC Milan, where he scored 63 goals in 150 matches and lifted the Serie A title in the 2010-11 season. His later career took him to Chelsea on loan and around the globe, but it is his San Siro peak that still resonates.
Now his next chapter may unfold in League Two boardrooms rather than Champions League stadiums.
If the deal is completed as expected next week, Northampton Town will step into a future shaped in part by a former Brazil international and an ambitious investment group that has already shown it is prepared to walk away if conditions are not right. This time, all signs point to them staying.
