Noah Atubolu shines as Frankfurt defeats Mainz in derby

Noah Atubolu walked into Mainz as Eintracht Frankfurt’s Deadline Day keeper. He walked out as the man Jürgen Klopp simply could not ignore.

With the Germany head coach watching from the stands, Frankfurt beat 1. FSV Mainz 05 3-1, a derby victory built on one extraordinary moment from 12 yards and finished off by a ruthless attacking display.

For a goalkeeper who had pushed for a Premier League move in the summer and only arrived in Frankfurt on Deadline Day after a drawn-out saga, this was some statement. With the next international break starting on 17 September, it was as clear and loud a recommendation as any for a first DFB call-up — delivered right under Klopp’s nose.

Uzun punishes Mainz

The psychological swing was brutal. Mainz went from the brink of 1-1 to 2-0 down in a heartbeat.

Moments after Atubolu’s save, Frankfurt broke again and Can Uzun made them pay, striking virtually on the stroke of half-time to double the lead. The home side sagged; Frankfurt smelled blood.

After the restart, Uzun finished the job. On the hour mark, he struck again to make it 3-0 for SGE, turning a tight derby into a comfortable away win on the scoreboard and underlining Frankfurt’s control of the afternoon.

Mainz did eventually find a response, but it came far too late. Phillip Tietz pulled one back in the 89th minute, a consolation that changed neither the mood nor the narrative.

Atubolu’s aura from the spot now feels imposing, almost theatrical. Six penalties in a row saved in the Bundesliga, a personal record that now stands alone in league history.

He is not untouchable, though, and the numbers carry their own reminder. Before this remarkable run, Julian Weigl, Lois Openda and Marvin Ducksch all beat him from the spot in 2023 and 2024, his first three Bundesliga penalties faced.
