Nico Elvedi Joins Leeds United from Borussia Monchengladbach

Leeds United have landed experienced Swiss defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal worth up to £8.5m, handing Daniel Farke a leader for the heart of his back line.

The 29-year-old has signed a three-year contract at Elland Road and, crucially, reunites with Farke, who coached him during the 2022-23 season in the Bundesliga. That relationship proved decisive.

“He is also a big point for this change,” Elvedi said, underlining how heavily Farke’s presence weighed on his decision. “It was just one year but I loved to have him as a manager. I learned a lot from him and I will learn a lot now.”

Monchengladbach accepted an offer of £6.8m up front, with a further £1.7m in add-ons. It ends an 11-year stay in Germany for Elvedi, who became a mainstay at Gladbach, racking up 364 appearances and establishing himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable defenders.

On the international stage, his pedigree is equally clear. Elvedi has 73 caps for Switzerland and played every minute of their recent run to the World Cup quarter-finals, arriving in Yorkshire with the kind of big-tournament experience Leeds have lacked in recent years.

His signing continues a busy summer at Elland Road. Elvedi is the club’s fourth arrival of the window, following goalkeeper James Trafford, winger Harry Wilson and fellow defender Tarik Muharemovic, as Leeds reshape a squad built to sustain a promotion push and then survive at the top level.

The dominoes moved quickly once Elvedi came through the door. His arrival opened the way for Sebastiaan Bornauw to leave on a season-long loan to Hamburg, trimming the centre-back department and clearing space in the wage bill.

There was more movement in attack too. Earlier on Wednesday, striker Joel Piroe completed a season-long loan move to West Ham, shifting the focus firmly onto how Farke rebuilds his forward line while bedding in a new defensive general.

Elvedi knows the manager, knows the demands, and knows the level. Now Elland Road waits to see if that familiarity can anchor Leeds’ next step.
