Mourinho's Key Message to Vinicius Jr: Stay at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has revealed the blunt message he delivered to Vinicius Jr as Real Madrid fought to keep their star winger out of Arsenal’s reach this summer: don’t walk away.

Vinicius, 26, had entered the final year of his deal at the Bernabeu and was on course to be one of the most coveted free agents in world football next summer. Arsenal, fresh from a Premier League title, were watching closely as negotiations dragged on.

They never got their chance.

Earlier this month, Vinicius signed a six-year contract to stay in Madrid, a statement of intent from both player and club. Mourinho, back at Real for a second spell after his return was confirmed in June, has now lifted the lid on the conversation he believes helped close the door on any exit.

Speaking on Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, the 63-year-old said:

“Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid.

The only thing I told him was: ‘Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. You only understand Real Madrid when you leave. When you leave that’s when you realise what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.’”

For Mourinho, it was about more than romance with the badge. It was about what the player had felt inside the dressing room over the past year.

“I think what he has felt in terms of the group’s growth, the way we’ve been working and developing, has given him a very important feeling,” he added.

Mourinho’s relationship with Vinicius has been shaped not just by the training ground, but by a stormy Champions League night last season when they stood on opposite sides.

Then in charge of Benfica, Mourinho faced Real three times in Europe. During the first leg of their knockout phase play-off, Real players claimed Benfica youngster Gianluca Prestianni racially abused Vinicius, prompting an eight-minute stoppage as tensions flared.

Prestianni denied the allegations. Mourinho stood squarely behind his player.

Uefa later banned Prestianni for three matches, with a further three suspended, for homophobic conduct related to the incident.

Looking back on that flashpoint, Mourinho made it clear that, whatever the past, Vinicius now knows exactly where he stands with his new coach.

“Prestianni was my player. That’s it. There’s no debate. If Prestianni is my player, 20 players can come at me and I’m still with Prestianni. End of story,” he said.

“I think Vini now knows what side I am now on and knows he can look me in the eye and rely on me to be on his side.”

Real Madrid have their winger tied down until the end of the decade. Mourinho has his talisman. And Arsenal, once sensing an opening, are left wondering what might have been.
