Newcastle United Pursues Joaquin Seys Amid Full-Back Crisis

Matthias Jaissle heads towards the new Premier League season with his options on both defensive flanks badly stripped back, injuries and squad gaps combining to leave the Magpies exposed where it matters most. Recruitment in those wide defensive areas is not a luxury. It’s the priority.
Now a new name has entered the conversation.
Newcastle join crowded race for Seys
Newcastle have been linked with Club Brugge left-back Joaquin Seys, one of the standout young defenders in Belgian football and already a full international at 21. The problem? They’re far from alone.
According to The Sun, Manchester United, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Benfica and Porto are all tracking Seys, with the Premier League trio understood to have pushed their interest further than Newcastle so far.
“SunSport understands that Man Utd, Arsenal and Aston Villa have all submitted enquiries as to Seys' availability following extensive scouting,” the outlet reported, while also noting interest from Aston Villa, Newcastle and Portuguese giants Benfica and Porto.
At this stage, Newcastle’s admiration looks real but less advanced. There is no mention of a formal enquiry from St. James’ Park, while some of their domestic rivals have already made their move.
Rising star with Champions League and World Cup pedigree
Seys has surged through the ranks at Club Brugge to become one of their most promising assets. Last season he nailed down a regular place, making 25 league appearances and adding nine more in the Champions League, a serious workload for a defender still in his early twenties.
Those performances carried him all the way to the World Cup. He made Belgium’s squad this summer and featured in their quarterfinal defeat to eventual champions Spain, a significant stage for a player still establishing himself at club level.
That blend of domestic consistency, European exposure and major-tournament experience explains why so many heavyweight clubs are circling.
Price tag and a club in no rush
Any club hoping to prise Seys away from Brugge will have to pay. And pay big.
With three years left on his contract, Club Brugge are described as being under no pressure to sell and are set to demand around €35 million (£30m) for their rising star, according to The Sun. For a 21-year-old full-back, that is not a speculative flutter. It is a statement signing.
For Newcastle, already investing heavily in young talent, the fee would represent another substantial outlay on potential as much as present-day certainty.
Newcastle’s full-back dilemma
The need, though, is glaring.
Newcastle insist Lewis Hall is not for sale despite interest from Manchester United, a stance that at least protects one key option on the left. On the opposite side, Tino Livramento’s injury, suffered on the verge of the World Cup, has stripped Jaissle of another senior full-back at precisely the wrong time.
That combination has pushed full-back recruitment to the top of the agenda and cranked up the urgency to get deals done before the new campaign kicks off.
Seys would immediately deepen the pool at left-back and fit the club’s broader strategy of recruiting young, high-upside players. But at €35 million, he also forces a bigger question for Newcastle’s hierarchy.
Do they keep doubling down on youth, paying premium prices for players who might define the next decade? Or, with the squad already short on fit, experienced full-backs, is it time to pivot towards a battle-hardened defender who can walk straight into the team and steady things from day one?
Newcastle know they need full-backs. The real decision is what kind of full-back shapes the next phase of this project.
