Newcastle United Target Geny Catamo for January Transfer
Newcastle United are already looking beyond a youth-focused summer and into a January window that could demand something bolder. High on the early watchlist: Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo.
The 25-year-old Mozambique international has emerged as one of the more intriguing wide options in Europe, and Newcastle have ramped up their interest. According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, the club have stepped up scouting of Catamo in recent weeks, positioning themselves among a growing group of Premier League admirers.
They are not alone. Bailey reports that Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Brighton have all checked on Catamo, while Aston Villa are also keeping tabs on his situation. The list is getting longer. So is the queue.
Catamo is doing his part to fuel the attention. He has opened the season in sharp form for Sporting, registering two goals and three assists in his first seven appearances. That kind of end product, combined with his age profile and development ceiling, fits neatly with the type of player Newcastle have been targeting under their current recruitment strategy.
This is not a new name inside recruitment departments. Bailey notes that several clubs, including Premier League sides, made contact with Catamo’s camp earlier in the summer and have continued to track him. The sticking point, then and now, lies firmly in Lisbon.
Sporting’s stance is clear and uncompromising. During the summer window, Sunderland pushed hardest and made Catamo their primary target, only to be rebuffed. The Portuguese club refused to negotiate and pointed every suitor straight at the winger’s €60 million (£51 million) release clause. Sunderland walked away rather than meet the full figure.
They have not lost interest, but the landscape has shifted. What was once a Championship club’s ambitious pursuit is now a multi-club Premier League battle, with Newcastle, Brentford, Forest, Brighton and Villa all monitoring the same opportunity.
One element tilts slightly in the English clubs’ favour: the player’s own ambition. Bailey reports that Catamo is “more than open” to a move to the Premier League and attracted by the idea of testing himself in England. For any buying club, that matters. It removes one variable from a complicated equation.
The biggest variable remains Sporting. There is no sign yet that Newcastle have lodged a bid or opened formal talks, and there is nothing to suggest Sporting have softened their position on the €60 million clause. January will likely hinge on whether that hard line bends even slightly.
If it doesn’t, the question becomes brutally simple for Newcastle and the rest: is Geny Catamo a €60 million winger, or does that kind of money get spent somewhere else in a window where every decision shapes the next phase of the project?
