Newcastle United’s midfield rebuild is gathering pace, but the work is far from finished.

The arrival of Manchester City’s Nico Gonzalez is expected to plug one gap, yet inside St James’ Park there is a clear sense that more surgery is needed before the Sept. 1 deadline. Matthias Jaissle has already seen Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali depart, and Joe Willock could follow with Besiktas circling. That is the core of a midfield ripped out in one summer.

No surprise, then, that Newcastle have spent weeks scouring the market. Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall has been on the list. Now another Spurs name has moved back into focus.

Newcastle revive interest in Archie Gray

According to the Daily Mail, relayed by DeadlineDaylive, Newcastle have renewed their interest in Tottenham midfielder Archie Gray. The 20-year-old is admired not just for his talent, but for the range of roles he can cover.

Gray joined Spurs from Leeds United for £40 million (€46 million) and has already racked up 81 appearances. He has featured in central midfield, at centre-back and at right-back, a level of flexibility that instantly appeals to a Newcastle squad stretched by departures and European ambitions. Even so, his natural home remains in the middle of the pitch.

That versatility comes at a price.

Gray’s current market value is listed at around €35 million, but the Daily Mail reports Tottenham value him at more than £60 million (€69 million). Internally, Spurs see him as a key part of Roberto De Zerbi’s plans rather than a saleable asset.

Spurs’ spending shapes the equation

Tottenham’s summer outlay tells its own story. With €267 million already committed and the window still open, the club is under pressure to balance the books. They are expected to listen to offers for certain players as they look to raise funds.

Gray, though, is not thought to be on that list of preferred departures. His status only grew in pre-season, when he captained Spurs, and he wore the armband again in their Premier League opener against Brentford. For a 20-year-old, that is a powerful endorsement.

Yet his role is still evolving. Despite the captaincy stints and regular minutes, Gray has not consistently nailed down a starting spot in his favoured midfield position. That tension between importance and opportunity is exactly what tends to draw the attention of ambitious rivals.

Newcastle’s dilemma: pay up or look elsewhere?

For Newcastle, the picture is delicate rather than desperate. With Gonzalez now seemingly the primary immediate midfield target, there is no need to rush into a bidding war for Gray or to smash through their valuation just to make a statement.

The question is simple and brutal: is a player Tottenham value at more than £60 million the right piece for this stage of Newcastle’s rebuild? Or, once the Gonzalez deal is wrapped up, should those funds be pushed into other areas of the squad?
