Manchester United are refusing to let Lewis Hall go as the transfer window ticks towards its final hours – but Newcastle are just as determined not to blink.
According to the Daily Mail, United’s hierarchy remain fixated on the 21-year-old left-back and have monitored him closely all summer. They see an England international with Premier League pedigree, a long-term solution for a problem position, and a player ready to grow into Old Trafford.
Newcastle see something else: a cornerstone they cannot afford to lose.
Newcastle’s hard line
The Magpies have made their position clear. Hall is not on the market. Not on deadline day, not after a summer in which key names have already walked out of St James’ Park.
Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon have all departed in this window, stripping away a large chunk of Eddie Howe’s core. With that context, Newcastle’s stance on Hall hardens. Club figures are described as reluctant to sanction yet another major exit, especially one involving a starting full-back.
There is, however, a number. The report states that Newcastle would at least listen if an offer of more than £75m landed on their desk. Anything less, and United are wasting their time.
Hall’s rise and frustration
Hall has rapidly climbed the Premier League ranks since his £35m move from Chelsea in 2023. He has become one of the division’s standout left-backs, blending defensive reliability with the energy and quality modern full-backs are expected to bring.
That rise has not yet translated into a World Cup ticket. Despite his form, Hall missed out on Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the tournament, a snub that hit hard. The disappointment fuelled his desire for a fresh start earlier in the summer, and he made clear his interest in a move to United.
The attraction is obvious: a giant of English football, a manager who wants him, and Champions League nights on the horizon.
Carrick’s left-back dilemma
Michael Carrick is driving United’s pursuit. The manager wants more depth and competition on the left side of his defence ahead of the club’s return to Europe’s elite competition.
Luke Shaw was an iron man last season, starting all 38 Premier League games and delivering one of his best campaigns. Yet inside Old Trafford there are lingering doubts – not about his quality, but about whether that level and physical output can be sustained.
Carrick wants insurance. He also wants evolution. Hall fits both briefs.
A deal that may have to wait
For now, the numbers and the timing are against United. Their admiration for Hall is not in doubt, but the sense from the Daily Mail report is that striking an agreement before the window shuts will be extremely difficult.
The most realistic scenario? United step back, park the move, and circle again when the market is less frantic and Newcastle’s position can be tested with more time and leverage.
They have done it before. The club played the long game with Carlos Baleba, delaying their move for 12 months after initial talks hit a wall, then finally getting the deal over the line this summer.
