Newcastle Targets Botafogo's Alvaro Montoro Amid Competition
Newcastle United’s youth-focused rebuild has a new name on the board: Alvaro Montoro.
The 19-year-old Botafogo midfielder has joined a growing list of highly rated teenagers tracked by the club as Matthias Jaissle’s squad continues to get younger. Several players aged 21 or under have already arrived this summer, and the recruitment drive clearly isn’t just about filling immediate first‑team gaps. Newcastle are hunting upside.
This time, the trail runs through Rio.
Seven-club race for Argentine talent
Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, via reporter Letícia Marques, reports that Newcastle are one of seven clubs to have registered interest in Montoro. The competition is serious: AC Milan, Ajax, Sporting CP, Real Betis, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Atlanta United have all been mentioned in the chase.
“The list of clubs interested in Montoro is long: Atlanta United, Betis, Milan, Newcastle, Ajax, Sporting, and Wolverhampton,” Marques reported.
Most of those European sides, according to the same report, have placed Montoro’s value at around €20 million (£17.3 million). There were even indications of a bid in that region. The response from Botafogo was blunt.
Negotiations went nowhere. The Brazilian club decided they simply weren’t selling.
Botafogo’s stance hardens
Botafogo’s refusal isn’t just about protecting a prospect. It’s about timing and money.
Marques reports that the club initially planned to cash in on Montoro and teammate Danilo earlier in the year to ease financial pressure. Then everything changed. The arrival of GDA as a new investor strengthened Botafogo’s position and effectively took the club out of “forced seller” territory.
With fresh backing, Botafogo can now afford to say no. The plan is to keep both Montoro and Danilo at least until the end of the current Brazilian season, and the board has already turned down a €20m-level offer from another South American club.
That rejection hints at a higher internal valuation. If €20m was once a fair starting point, it no longer looks close.
To tighten their grip further, Botafogo recently moved to secure Montoro on a new contract, reportedly running until December 2030. Every month that passes with the teenager performing in Brazil only strengthens their hand at the table.
Montoro’s European ambition
The door is closed for now, but not locked forever.
Marques reports that Montoro wants to play in Europe and that his representatives have been told Botafogo could reopen talks once the domestic campaign is over. The player understands the club’s decision to block a transfer in this window, but the long-term trajectory is clear: the next step lies across the Atlantic.
That long view will interest Newcastle. The club has already shown a willingness to identify targets early, wait out difficult negotiations and strike when the market tilts in their favour. Montoro fits that pattern: 19 years old, Argentine, already producing in a demanding environment.
Since joining Botafogo from Vélez Sarsfield last year, he has made 59 appearances, scoring six goals and adding seven assists. Those numbers, from midfield and at his age, explain why a cluster of European clubs has converged on his name.
A future bidding war?
For now, Botafogo’s stance means Newcastle’s interest remains just that: interest. No active deal, no advanced talks, no breakthrough on fee.
But the situation is set up for a different kind of battle in a few months’ time. A player who wants Europe. A club newly empowered to hold out for top dollar. A contract running to 2030. And at least half a dozen serious suitors already circling.
If Newcastle decide Montoro is worth pursuing when Botafogo finally pick up the phone again, the question won’t be whether they rate him. It will be how far they are prepared to go once the price climbs well beyond that early €20m marker.
