Mourinho's Message to Vinicius Jr: Stay at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has revealed the blunt message he delivered to Vinicius Jr as Real Madrid fought to keep one of their crown jewels out of the transfer market.

With the Brazilian entering the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu, the scenario was clear: wait 12 months and he could walk away for nothing. Arsenal, fresh from winning the Premier League, were watching closely, ready to test Real’s resolve and the player’s loyalty.

That door is now shut. Earlier this month, Vinicius signed a new six-year deal, tying him to Madrid deep into his prime. Mourinho insists that was never really in doubt once they spoke.

Mourinho’s straight talk

Speaking on Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, the 63-year-old laid out the conversation that, in his view, helped keep Vinicius in white.

“Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid,” Mourinho said. Then he recalled his message to the winger: “The only thing I told him was: ‘Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. You only understand Real Madrid when you leave. When you leave that’s when you realise what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.’”

For Mourinho, it was about more than sentiment. He pointed to the atmosphere around the squad and the work being done since his return to the club for a second spell, confirmed in June.

“I think what he has felt in terms of the group’s growth, the way we’ve been working and developing, has given him a very important feeling,” he said.

The message landed. Arsenal’s interest faded, the speculation cooled, and Madrid locked down one of the game’s elite wide forwards for the long term.

From touchline rivals to the same side

Mourinho’s relationship with Vinicius has not always been framed from the same bench. Last season, he faced Real three times in the Champions League while in charge of Benfica, a run that included a deeply controversial night during their knockout phase play-off first leg.

In that game, Real players accused Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni of racially abusing Vinicius, prompting an eight-minute stoppage as tensions boiled over. Prestianni denied the allegations, and Mourinho immediately moved to protect his own player.

“Prestianni was my player. That’s it. There’s no debate,” Mourinho said. “If Prestianni is my player, 20 players can come at me and I’m still with Prestianni. End of story.”

Uefa later investigated and issued a three-match ban to Prestianni for homophobic conduct, with a further three games suspended. The governing body did not categorise the punishment as relating to racist abuse.

Now, with Mourinho back at the Bernabeu and Vinicius central to Madrid’s plans, the Portuguese coach insists the Brazilian knows exactly where he stands.

“I think Vini now knows what side I am now on and knows he can look me in the eye and rely on me to be on his side,” he said.

From fierce European opponent to guardian of one of Real Madrid’s most valuable assets, Mourinho has made his position clear: Vinicius Jr belongs at the Bernabeu — and under his watch, that is where he intends him to stay.
