Manchester United Near Deal for Carlos Baleba from Brighton
Manchester United are moving steadily towards a deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, with negotiations between the clubs described as calm, constructive and very much alive.
United have tabled an opening offer worth around £60 million (€70m) plus a further £5m in potential add-ons, according to The Athletic. Brighton believe that bid falls short of their valuation of the 22-year-old, but the tone of the talks has stayed positive, with both sides working to narrow the gap rather than walk away from the table.
United’s midfield rebuild
This is not a late whim from Old Trafford. Strengthening central midfield has been one of United’s main priorities throughout the summer window.
Youri Tielemans has already arrived from Aston Villa, adding Premier League experience and passing range. Andrey Santos has come in from Chelsea as a younger, developing option. United even reached an agreement with Atalanta for Ederson earlier in the window, only to pull out after concerns emerged over the Brazilian’s knee.
They then turned to Elliot Anderson, only to see the England international choose the blue half of Manchester and sign for Manchester City. Each twist has sharpened the focus on finding the right profile and the right body for Michael Carrick’s engine room.
Injuries have only raised the stakes. Manuel Ugarte picked up an injury during the World Cup with Uruguay, while Mason Mount missed United’s final two pre-season fixtures. The result: United’s need for another high-level midfielder has gone from important to urgent.
Baleba’s rise at Brighton
Baleba joined Brighton from Lille in the summer of 2023 and has grown into a central pillar of the south-coast club’s side. He has already racked up 112 appearances in all competitions for the Seagulls, a remarkable tally for a player still only 22.
Last season he featured 35 times for Brighton, his rhythm interrupted only briefly when he linked up with Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations. When available, he played. Regularly. And with influence.
That body of work has convinced United that Baleba can step straight into the demands of Old Trafford, both in domestic competition and in Europe.
What awaits at Old Trafford
Should the deal go through, Baleba would walk into a fiercely competitive midfield group. Carrick’s options would include Tielemans, Santos, Kobbie Mainoo and captain Bruno Fernandes, with Baleba expected to compete immediately for a first-team role rather than serve as a long-term project.
United want him in the building quickly. Pre-season is drawing to a close, competitive fixtures are just around the corner, and every day without their new midfielder is a day lost on the training pitch. The plan is clear: complete the agreement, get Baleba integrated, and give Carrick as close to a settled midfield as possible before the season truly bites.
For now, the dialogue between United and Brighton remains open and upbeat, with all parties confident that a compromise on the final fee can be found. If that confidence proves justified, Baleba’s next appearance in red may not be for Cameroon, but under the lights at Old Trafford.
