Jose Mourinho Explains Why Real Madrid Dropped Rodri Pursuit Ahead of Barcelona Transfer
Jose Mourinho has shared the reason behind Real Madrid's withdrawal from the race to sign Rodri this summer, before the midfielder's high-profile move to Barcelona. The Portuguese coach revealed that hesitation from the player was a key factor in Madrid stepping back.
Rodri Joins Barcelona in Major Transfer
The 2025 Ballon d'Or winner officially joined Barcelona with a four-year deal lasting until June 2030. The transfer fee started at €60 million with performance-related bonuses potentially pushing it to €76.5 million. After a successful spell at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium, Rodri pushed for a move away. Initially, Madrid appeared set to secure the signing, with agent Pablo Barquero confirming an irresistible offer was made, but Rodri chose their city rivals instead.
Mourinho Reveals What Went Wrong in Madrid's Pursuit
Speaking to El Chiringuito, Mourinho said Madrid presented a lucrative offer and enjoyed good relations with Manchester City. Yet, Rodri's uncertainty caused the deal to collapse.
"I spoke to him a couple of times and Real Madrid made him a very good offer," Mourinho said. "There is a strong relationship with City. Without negotiating with City first, Madrid contacted Rodri directly with a major proposal. But Rodri hesitated, and his doubts created doubts for me."
He added that Real Madrid demands decisiveness from players. Mourinho praised Rodri’s respectfulness but noted the club can't accommodate players who second-guess themselves.
"Real Madrid is a club of a size where you don’t have players who hesitate. When you make contact, the player should ask: 'When do I join?' That’s the concept. But he was respectful, and I wish him well… just not too well," Mourinho joked.
No Regrets Over Missing Rodri, Says Mourinho
Despite missing out on the 2026 World Cup Golden Ball winner, Mourinho rejected any regret. While many saw Rodri as the ideal replacement for the aging Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, Mourinho insists his squad is strong and ready.
"I am not lacking Rodri," Mourinho declared. "We are not short on players. I’m not saying there won’t be new signings since the market is open, but for me, it’s closed. I really like this squad."
Madrid's Midfield Strategy and Upcoming Season
During preseason, Mourinho has favored a 4-2-3-1 setup with a double pivot. Federico Valverde and Bernardo Silva have logged the most minutes together in midfield. As La Liga kicks off, Madrid's midfield remains a hot topic, especially with Rodri now set to strengthen Barcelona's side and challenge Madrid in the title race.
