Mohamed Salah's Impact on Trabzonspor and Tourism
Mohamed Salah’s arrival at Trabzonspor is already being felt far beyond the pitch.
Erkut Çelebi, head of the Trabzon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, says the Egyptian star’s move has triggered a surge in tourism interest in the Black Sea city, stretching well past Egypt and into a string of North African countries. Hotels, airlines and local businesses are suddenly looking at a very different kind of season.
For years, Trabzon’s tourism boom has been brief. Three, maybe four busy months, then the crowds thin out and hotel occupancy drops sharply. Speaking to local outlet 61saat, Çelebi outlined how city officials now see Salah as the catalyst to break that cycle and turn a short, intense rush into a year‑round flow of visitors.
The plan is simple in theory, ambitious in practice: use the global pull of Mohamed Salah and the attention around his move to Trabzonspor to keep the city on the map long after the summer ends. That means packaging football with the region’s natural scenery, culture and hospitality, and convincing fans and tourists that Trabzon is not just a stopover, but a destination.
Trabzonspor confirmed Salah’s signing last Thursday, announcing a two‑year deal on a free transfer after his contract with Liverpool expired at the end of last season. On the field, it’s a statement signing. Off it, the city is already treating it as an economic turning point.
