Max Eberl's Response to Lamine Yamal on Ballon d'Or Debate

Max Eberl did not name Lamine Yamal directly, but the message was crystal clear.

Fresh from watching Bayern Munich crush Union Berlin 7-0 on Friday, the club’s sporting director used the mixed zone to wade into the Ballon d'Or debate – and fire a pointed response to the Barcelona teenager’s recent comments about how the prize should be decided.

Asked about Yamal’s remarks on the criteria for the award, Eberl cut straight to the heart of it. "The best players are those who do not need a promotional campaign," he said, a line that landed like a jab in the ongoing narrative war around the trophy.

Eberl didn’t stop there. With the Allianz Arena still buzzing after Bayern’s rout, he used the moment to champion one of his own. Michael Olise, who had just produced a hat-trick in the demolition of Union Berlin, was pushed firmly into the Ballon d'Or conversation.

"For me, Michael Olise is also a candidate for the Ballon d'Or. He is one of the best players in the world," Eberl declared, tying the Englishman’s stunning performance directly to football’s most coveted individual prize.

The backdrop to all this is Lamine Yamal’s own view of what should define a Ballon d'Or winner. Speaking to "Movistar Plus", the Barcelona star argued that sheer numbers on the scoresheet – the very argument Bayern figures have leaned on in defence of Harry Kane – should not be decisive.

"I think the Ballon d'Or should go to the best player in the world, nothing more," Yamal said. "Not to a player who scored 80 goals, because if you score 80 goals you win the award for top scorer of the year. The two things are completely different, and people don't understand that."

So the lines are drawn. One camp insists the true greats don’t need campaigns. Another pushes back against the tyranny of goal tallies. And in the middle of it all, after a 7-0 statement win, Michael Olise’s name has just been thrown into the fire of a Ballon d'Or race that is getting louder by the week.
